Work and all that.

I had my alarm set for 6:20am, but I kept hitting snooze until 7:02am. Come to think of it, so did Daniel, because he had his alarm set for the same time…only my clock is a minute ahead. So mine would go off, Id turn it off, a minute later his would go off, hed turn it off, and so on and so forth :sleepw: until I finally roused myself up and out of bed.
You know, the news was saying how we were going to get 3-7 of snow that would start around 3-4am this morning (Sat. morning) and would taper off to light flurries by afternoon, and those flurries would end by evening… well, when I went out to go to work at 7:45, it had just begun snowing. Damn, what a disappointment. :feelingblue:
Work went… fast. Damn Christmas shoppers. Theyre so cranky and rude. Ugh. And to think, itll only get worse as Christmas gets closer. Fellow idiotic consumers, let me share a few helpful tips from your friendly (picking up on the sarcasm there?) retail cashier:
Rolling your eyes at me while waiting in line will not make me move any faster. I am not going to rush the customer and bag things sloppily just to check you out sooner. In fact, rolling your eyes at me will only make me ignore you completely, and focus 100% on my current customer.
Be nice to us cashiers. When we smile and say “hello”, dont just stand there and stare at us, or dig in your purse for an imaginary piece of gum so you dont have to respond. Did I have to open my mouth and say anything to you? No. I could have simply rung up your cheap Target brand toilet paper and sanitary pads, forget to ring in the coupons, and then charge you full price without batting an eye. Remember that, mmmkay?
Keep your hands off of the scanner. Ringing your items up for me will not make me smile. In fact, it annoys me, because I get distracted by making sure youre not ringing up the damn thing twice so I have to go back and fix it, or worse yet, not notice that you rang it up twice and wind up over-charging you, and then get bitched at by you, regardless of the fact that you did it to your damn self.
Speak English please. I dont have the patience nor the knowledge to decipher garbled Spanish/Chinese/Russian. Its okay if youre not a native English speaker, but for fucks sake bring along an interpreter, write it down on paper, or dont ask questions!
Dont mess with the bagging rack. The bags are a bitch to put on, and impossible to put back on once theyve been pulled off because youre too incompetent to pull one bag off without ripping off another 50 or so.
Listen to directions. Hell, while youre at it, read them. The debit/credit card slider is there for your convenience, not for you to fuck around and make an ass out of yourself. On the box itself it says (in big bold white letters outlined in red) “Select card type before sliding”. On the little LCD screen it says “Select card type before sliding”. Because I know most of you are fucking morons that dont bother to read, I always SAY “select card type before sliding”. So, SELECT THE FUCKING CARD TYPE before sliding, because otherwise your sliding wont do jack shit.
Dont ask me where items are located at while Im ringing up someones purchases. I can only do so many things (four, to be exact: ring up items, make sure the items ring up correctly, smile and talk cordially to the customer, watch for shoplifters) at once, and I dont need your impatience screwing things up for me. Thats why we have numerous people on the sales floor.
Show a little restraint and dont run over small children and elderly people with your loaded shopping cart simply because I just opened my register lane. We all know that you just have to be first, but show some concern for others.
I do not spend my non-working hours walking around the store to memorize every single current sale, so when I ring up your items (the price of every scanned item is shown clearly to you on the register screen) and then total it, and then you pay for it, dont pitch a bitch because the toilet paper rung up at $1.49 instead of $1.19 and now you have to go to customer service to get the damn 20 cent difference. You should have told me about the damn sale in the first place.

Well, thats all I can think of… for now!

Thankfully I have off tomorrow. I picked up my paycheck yesterday: $117. Next weeks will be a bit higher. And the week afters will be a bit higher than that, since Ill have just about 30 hours on it. Id have more, except that Im not working this Sunday or next Saturday.

OMG, I totally identify. I worked at Target last x-mas season, and holy shit… NEVER AGAIN! Its funny how I knew you worked at Target before I even read all of the rant… ohh the memories!

Wow, you hate those ppl dont you? o.O You know some of the stuff as in rolling eyes, and running over ppl to get in line is pretty idiotic, but the other stuff? Its just… well…natural. Say, the “speaking English” part, ok, not everyone CAN speak English. My mom cant speak it very well, she can speak it, just not very fluently. There is NO WAY she will hire a personal interpreter to follow her everywhere she goes and translate everything for her (no, she isnt the president) and if she doesnt understand something, is it a sin to ask? They should be applauded because even tho they cant speak the language very well, they are still willing to try. And about the last part of your post, if an item is ON SALE. It is assumed that the price has been changed in the records, so that the customer will not be charged the regular price. It IS NOT the customers job to inform the cashier about things being on sale. If the company failed to change the price efficiently, it is the fault of the store and not the buyer. The buyer has every right to be frustrated about it. Those people are there to buy things, not to work for the store. Im sorry, if you disagree with me, and are probably being very annoyed with me, but, heh, thats what the comments are for right? :) Anyway, I hope its gets better for you, but try to look at things from the others perspective, itll make your job more pleasant :)

Kristen, I would love to know where you live because your life must be so perfect if you never heard someone complain about work. I know I complain about work and I dont even work. I have to admire Jenn for the shit she puts up with everyday. What state do you live in? I agree with Tess, your a twat.

I used to work at walmart and some people would wait until they got to the register and ask me where something was, and if I didnt know, I would have to call that dept and find out.. ugh.. stupid people!!!!!

  9. Nikki wrote on #

oh and on the comment about speaking English, I had to deal with that also. I agree with what you said Jenn. It doesnt bother me that not everyone speaks English but they should not expect us to understand their language in a country that speaks primarily English. And to top it off, a lot of people who cant speak English get mad when someone cant understand them.

i too hate my job, and it is hard to make a living when youre not living at your parents… (looks at kristin). yes you are poor, but at least, youre responsible for your own ass…

  11. Michelle wrote on #

@Nikki: Really? They get mad? Im pretty sure my parents wont get mad. Theyll just be embarassed that they are using up someone elses time in order to try and make the other person understand. And I think Jenn means that the people at Target tries to speak English, but with a really bad accent. And it seems as tho they are speaking another language. Well, what do you want them to do? Really bring along a translator?? o.O

  12. Nikki wrote on #

Michelle, I have had people get frustrated with me because I cant understand them.. and in the cases I have dealt with, they were speaking another language. And they have the nerve to get upset with me because I don t know what the hell they are saying. They dont have to bring a translator but they dont have the right to get mad at me if I dont understand them either. And Michelle, I dont know your parents, so I cant say how they would react. I didnt say everyone who didnt speak english acted that way, just some people. I just think that if you live in a country that speaks predominately english, then you should learn enough english so that people can understand you.

  13. Michelle wrote on #

But some people came to the country at the age of like 40! Do you expect them to start learning a new language now? Imagine your grandma immigrating to, say, China, do you expect her to learn Chinese? o.O Anyway, those ppl should get frustrated if ppl dont understand them, and the person listening shouldnt get frustrated either because they cant understand… :)

When people say nothing when I ask them how they are when Im working on checkouts, and they ignore me, I say “Thats good! Im fine thanks”. I get a few dirty looks hehe. But after 3 years working on checkouts…. ;P

  15. Nikki wrote on #

Well Michelle, maybe people should reconsider moving to another country if they have no intentions on learning the language of the country. Yes, I do think when someone moves to another country that he/she should attempt to learn the language. It is not my duty as an American citizen to convienience those who cannot speak English. Why do people who cant speak English have the right to get frustrated if some one cant understand them?? What should American people do?? Learn Spanish,Chinese, Japanese,Dutch,
Portuguese,etc..I think that is a little unreasonable.

  16. Lising wrote on #

Nikki, try picking up a new language when youre past forty and then we can talk.

  17. Lising wrote on #

by the way, i didnt mean to sound all pissy.. sorry…

  18. Nikki wrote on #

Why would I pick a new language at 40?? I am not going to be dumb enough to move to a country where I dont know the language. What I am saying is, I think it is stupid for someone to move here from another country and have no intentions of learning the language. I mean you wouldnt move to China or Japan and expect them to cater to you and learn English would you?? I know I wouldnt. If I were going to move to another country, I would make damn sure I new enough of the language to communicate with the people of that country. I have no sympathy for immigrants.. you wanna come to our country.. great..then learn how to speak English!

Not to start a war or contradict anything I said, but I REALLY DO AGREE WITH THAT!
