Snip snip!

So… does anyone have any tips on clipping a baby’s nails? More specifically – keeping the baby still while you’re doing the clipping! I use scissors (because I’m afraid that the clippers would be more likely to take off too much and cause sore fingers), and it takes two of us to do it – Daniel to hold Alyssa and her hand still, and me to clip her nails. She still manages to wiggle her fingers around, and tries to grab at the scissors. Ugh! :dammit:

Working tonight was worth it – brownie points with the higher-ups as well as more moolah for me! :cha-ching: I can’t wait to see what my paycheck for next week will be (Target offers a lot of resources that are accessed via internet, including previewing paychecks! )… I’m guess it’s going to be at least $600. Cha-ching baby!

So at guest services Sunday and then tonight, I had the following two gems…

Entitlement Bitch (EB).
EB came flouncing up to my counter area and threw a few bags of stuff and her receipt at me. She informed me that she was returning her purchases and would no longer be shopping at Target. When I politely inquired if anything was wrong, she began spouting off at the mouth about the ridiculous policies Target has.
Apparently EB was more than pissed at having to go out and move her non-handicapped car from a handicapped parking spot, per the “request” of our security staff. Heh. Request… it’s more like a threat. Her car’s description and license plate were broadcasted over the PA system, as well as the command to move the car or else expect it to be towed.
EB asked my thoughts, and I couldn’t help but voice my agreements (ever so politely, of course) with security. Needless to say, she was more than pissed at that point, and barely said a word as I finished her return, handed her her receipts and told her to have a good evening.

Lazy Bitch (LB).
LB comes up to the desk and tells me that she wants a dog Halloween costume in a size medium. I ask her if she could possibly get one of the ones we have, so that I could run a check on it in our system (we can check our store’s supply as well as other Targets within a 100 mile radius). She says she doesn’t feel like walking that far (like the other end of the store is that far away… ). Okay.
LB then mentions that she has the costume in a size small in her car, but she hadn’t brought it in because she didn’t want to drag it around unless she knew for sure we had the size she really wanted. I ask her if she would get the one from her car, because I could use its DPCI information to look it up in our system. She says no, she doesn’t feel like going out to the car, because omgwtfgrapes!!!111 it’s raining outside (it was misting lightly – nowhere near a torrential downpour, I assure you).
Fine… at this point I’m getting a little testy, because this woman is being deliberately obtuse, and I have a line building up. I get on the walkie and ask for someone from seasonal.
Minutes go by. No answer. No surprise, since this is grand opening, and the store is PACKED with every living person from miles around. LB is annoyed because she has to wait, and lashes out on me. Summoning all of the patience and cheerfulness I can muster, I respond with the following:
“Ma’am, there’s not much I can do for you if you won’t help me. You won’t go get one of the costumes for me to use to check the system, and you won’t get one from your car. And you’re giving me a hard time because no one from seasonal is answering. This is out of my control. I can’t leave guest services, so I’m going to have to apologize: I cannot help you with this.”
Amazingly, she took it in stride and left… while telling her two or so year old granddaughter to “sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up before I knock your face in”. Lovely…

Anyway. I have to be at work in seven hours, meaning I have less than six for sleeping. I think I shall try and go to bed. Goodnight!

Try cutting them while she is sleeping with baby clippers. That’s what we did with my nieces.

You have to love lazy people. NO! lol I wish you a better day tomorrow.

Brandy, on October 10 2005 at 2:26am:

Those were some people that you had to deal with, especially LB. What she told her granddaugher:dammit: Shouldn’t be allowed.

Well. Other then that, it sounds like your job is going okay. Sadly, there are some people out there who like to destroy things for you.

Tammy, on October 10 2005 at 4:27am:

You can get baby clippers but they’re pretty crap. If you have to cut them when shes awake try and keep her entertained with something else?? They usually peel off when they get too long anyway.

Jenny, on October 10 2005 at 4:30am:

i wait till allan is asleep before i cut them. thats my advice!

Nile, on October 10 2005 at 5:32am:

Ok… when we clipped Angel’s nails… Luis made a big mistake and snipped his thumb. You cannot be timid with a baby…with your free arm you need to pin the baby’s arm down and hold the hand firmly… Just make sure as you snip each nail that you are also holding each individual digital straight. You will not break the baby…. trust me… Also, if she has a pacifier, give that for a distraction or a teething ring.

Amanda, on October 10 2005 at 7:15am:

When I worked at our walmart there was a women who parked in the handicapped parking (she was not handicapped) and got a $50 ticket. She came into Walmart and complained and bitched about getting the ticket and our store manger gave her a $50 gift card cause she broke the law :dammit:

Ashley, on October 10 2005 at 9:55am:

I’ve never had a problem clipping Jordan’s fingernails. She’s usually so curious about the nail clippers she just sits and watches me. Or I’ll give her something to play with in the other hand.

Sara, on October 10 2005 at 9:56am:

I’m not a mother or anything but I’ve seen how my aunt clips her baby’s fingernails – Do it while she’s eating lunch or something. Daniel can distract her with feeding and you can start clipping!

Ally, on October 10 2005 at 10:10am:

I do what Ashley does.. I give her something for the other hand, usually a baby brush, since I don’t care if she chews on it or throws it halfway across the room. lol Then usually I can cut one hand without her trying to take the clippers away from me.

Louise, on October 10 2005 at 10:20am:

Hey Jennifer

Please do reply to my e-mail, I mentioned in my comment in your last blog.

If you reply later than friday, then I can’t answer it sunday the week after. Am on holiday then.

Mallory, on October 10 2005 at 10:55am:

Well, I’ve never cliped a baby’s nails, but I’ve cliped my cat’s nails. I just wait till he asleep and then carefully cliped his claws.

kelley, on October 10 2005 at 11:14am:

You can buy BABY nail clippers at the $ store that have a safe guard on them thats what I use on Ezabella.I have never clipped her fingers, They also sell them at Target hehehe, in all sorts of different animals they’re cute.
I am sorry to hear about your not so nice customers, I have had that very same problem in the past too.. But I learned to remember those same attitudes when I need to return something myself, and try NOT to become that EB, or LB. However that is NOTHING just wait until the day AFTER Thanksgiving, and the day after Christmas. I will start praying for you now!!! He He He have a good one,
Kelley

Janice, on October 10 2005 at 11:17am:

I would try to clip her nails while she is sleeping maybe on your bed or floor so she is accessible from all angles and maybe dont do them all at once do a few every time she sleeps and within 24 – 48 hours they should be trimmed :D
People can be so fucking stupid, Its amazing how dumb and rude people are while they return or come in for some random ass reason just to basically waste time… bothe women sound like complete bitches… and the 2nd woman saying that to her child is aweful there is no excuse for talking to an inocent child in that way… that almost made me cry some people are just sickl in the head… MY GOD!!!

Kat, on October 10 2005 at 11:28am:

Hey Jenn. For the baby nail subject, I always clip my daughter’s nails when she’s napping. It’s just so much easier. :)

Lissa, on October 10 2005 at 1:30pm:

Found your site through random links, thought I would leave a comment and let you know I enjoyed your writing. Keep it coming.

Ally, on October 10 2005 at 2:20pm:

lol I wish my daughter slept hard enough to clip them while she was down for a nap… she’d wake up if I picked up her hand!

Jo, on October 10 2005 at 2:30pm:

When Angel Jr. was younger I had trouble clipping his nails more than I do now. He normally just sits there watching me. Sometimes it’s best when they’re sleeping and about to doze off. They’re usually too tired to try and fught back.

Sounds like fun @ work. I used to have to deal with real bitches when I worked customer service at Raymour & Flanigan. Sometimes you just wanna tell them to “fuck off” or something, but then you realize it’s not worth it. And OMG, I can’t believe what she said to her grandchild. What a bitch!

Amanda, on October 10 2005 at 3:47pm:

Oh my, aren’t they lovely people? :blah:

max, on October 10 2005 at 4:12pm:

Aww I feel really bad for you. Props to you for dealing with these people!

Chela, on October 10 2005 at 5:30pm:

Try clipping her nails while she is sleeping. LOL I had to deal with my niece and nephew with that so I left it to my sister :-P. But yeah thats the only way to handle it unless the baby fully doesnt care. Scissors! OMGOSH use the baby clippers, they are much easier.
And for the job thing, you handled that very well. Thats why I had to leave fast food and go into a job that doesnt deal with people like that. But you are a very patient person, go girl :-D

Amber, on October 10 2005 at 5:56pm:

Holy shit. That makes me so angry how dumb and rude people can be. I love Target. It’s like the best store ever. I can’t imagine saying that you would never shop there again. Well, hello! You’re not fucking handicapped, so wth are you feeling the need to park in a spot that is not yours and then getting upset over something that YOU did. Dummies. And the lazy bitch, damn. What do you expect? Yeah, it helps if you have the product. And the whole I didn’t want to bring it in unless I knew you had it in the other size. Yeah, it helps if you bring it in so you can figure that out. Okay, wow. I’m getting way to worked up over something that doesn’t involve me. That’s weird. I always have though when I hear stupid ass stories of customers being dumb. It irks me how inconsiderate people can be and rude. Goodness. I’ve always hated that. I’ve dealt with my fair share of customers and it sucks.

Scott, on October 10 2005 at 7:32pm:

I could never work in a job like that. I don’t have the patience to deal with a bunch of angry customers. I’m afraid I’d say something that isn’t allowed.

Jessica, on October 10 2005 at 7:41pm:

Good Grief. You’re a trooper for putting up with that stuff. geez….

Lindsey, on October 10 2005 at 8:21pm:

wow, seems as I hear about them lazy ass people all the time. :eyeroll: They need to wake the hell up and think about the workers besides themself. They think YOU should do everything just because YOU work there. They need to get off their lazy asses!!!!!!! :blah:

Lindsey, on October 10 2005 at 8:21pm:

wow, seems as I hear about them lazy ass people all the time. :eyeroll: They need to wake the hell up and think about the workers besides themself. They think YOU should do everything just because YOU work there. They need to get off their lazy asses!!!!!!! :blah:

Aidan, on October 10 2005 at 10:07pm:

Your working all those extra hours and your paycheck is only going to be $600? Wooh, that’s a small paycheck… I’m not dissing you or anything, just I”m suprised at how much it is with the amount of hours you have been working…

For cutting Alyssa’s nails, I would try to cut them when she is sleeping, that would work best. Plus allowing her to fiddle with the cutters (supervision of course) when she is awake, that is if you are wanting to cut them while she is awake. Once the curiosity is out of her system it might become easier to do with out getting grabbed at. As you dont want to make it a negative experience for her..

Laura, on October 10 2005 at 10:32pm:

Don’t worry I’ve been throght it. I work at Marshall’s and they do it everyday. There’s only one thing that keeps me from telling them to fuck off: I’m still getting paid for this!! You shouldn’t let it bother you. If they tell your manager, you still have your side of the story being that she was lazy. And plus, you don’t know if she has that dog suit in her car. She could’ve shop lifted. I just hate it when the customers think we are their slaves to move around and everything they do it right. Oh well. Good luck with trimming Alyssa’s nails.

Jessica, on October 10 2005 at 11:47pm:

Oh my you must be so patient to deal with customers like that!! I work with kids and I can take rude kids because I just brush it off and think it’s a shame, but they’ve never been shown any better. But with rude adults I just can’t contain my frustration!!
Yay for money!!!

Melissa, on October 10 2005 at 12:42am:

I used to love working on TK Maxx’s service desk doing returns and customer queries, in fact I was the supervisor there for 5 months in a big store. Helping customers was fab, dealing with moaning customers was even better. It never got to me much, even when I was told I was a stupid b!tch because I couldn’t put the £2 the customer had used a credit note for on her credit card because of company policy.

Helping and dealing with the nice customers is fantastic, it makes up for the arrogant idiots who obviously know how your company works and how to do your job better than you! Saying that – give me a shouting, moaning customer any day. Knowing you’re right and that they’re making an arse of themselves is such a great feeling!

Doing Alyssa’s nails in her sleep is a good idea, I can remember trying to do my younger brothers and it was a pain! We ended up doing it while he was sleeping til he was about 5 because he caused so much hassle! And letting her see mummy and daddy getting it done too, and play with the clippers (under supervision, obviously) will let her know it’s a good thing that needs to get done. Turn it into a game if you can!

Glad I can see the site properly now, don’t know if you fixed anything or if it’s just fixed itself.

Jordan, on October 10 2005 at 1:25am:

You didn’t try to get someone to find the item for you? Asking the guest to go and get the item herself, is well, not really doing the best of service. Need an item to check for the DCPI, then that’s what the walkie is for. Can’t get anyone to do it, then you keep trying on the walkies, or contact the operator, and she can have someone look for it…

You’ll probably get close to $900 on your check, pending how much you make. Chris worked about 102 hours for a pay period and saw that much, but he also had more hours of ot (labor day). You’ll got so annoyed by the amount of taxes taken out though. It’s so disheartening to make so much money, yet have so much of it taken away from you.

Jess, on October 10 2005 at 11:50am:

So she was willing to walk IN the store, find out if they had the costume, go back outside to collect the costume from the car then go back inside the store. Other than to take the costume with her into the store… :wtf: Some people are lunatics!

Michelle, on October 10 2005 at 3:18pm:

My aunt would cut and paint my cousin’s nails while she was sleeping until she was old enough (she’s 3 now) to know to stay still. That worked pretty well.

Angu, on October 10 2005 at 5:33pm:

:haha: Customers are the greatest.
Times like this I’m glad I work from home now.
But go you girl, get your money! :highfive: And when they get on your nerves, don’t forget the patronising smirk. ;)

As to cutting nails. Wait till she’s asleep. All nail clipping and hair combing goes on when they’re asleep in my house.

Laura, on October 10 2005 at 6:30pm:

You work at Target? I love that store! And seriously I didn’t realize there’d be as many crazy customers (I have been customer service at 2 stores, one jewelry and one grocery) until I read on to your horror stories. I can’t believe “Lazy Bitch” said THAT to her grandkid? :wft: That mean stuff just breaks my heart.

Nikki, on October 10 2005 at 8:16pm:

sorry I don’t have any tips for cutting a baby’s nails..my youngest is 4 months so he isn’t too difficult. My other two are 4 and 8 so they don’t put up too much of a fuss when I have to cut their nails.

I don’t know why some customers insist on being difficult :eyeroll:. I have worked at Walmart before so I try to be considerate whenever I go shopping. :D

Carol, on October 10 2005 at 8:26pm:

I have no idea on clipping baby’s nails. Sorry….

I hate people like EB and LB. I don’t know why they have to be so difficult. However, its all worth it in the end. You get mooooney! :highfive:

namie, on October 10 2005 at 9:14pm:

I love how you handle those awful awful customers. I would never hold my temper the way you do. Good job.

Mike, on October 10 2005 at 11:10pm:

It would have been extremely difficult for me to be polite and kind. :frustrated:

Sarah, on October 10 2005 at 7:17am:

I know it may sound incredibly weird, and maybe a little unhygenic to you, but my dad had to do it with me when I was little, because I just wouldn’t stop figetting.

Rather than using clippers or scissors, try bitting her nails.. i know it’s weird :O Use your teeth, and trim them as if you were biting your own. That way you’re unlikely to hurt her :)

Vale, on October 10 2005 at 5:41pm:

There are these special clips for babies. They’re super tiny and harmless. They’re new and you an find them at super markets.
My mom once cut my finder with the clipps when I was a baby. It was terrible. But scissors are more dangerous.

Amy, on October 10 2005 at 8:16pm:

Sorry, no advice :( Abby stays very still when I clip her nails. I assume you’re talking about using baby clippers and not regular? They’re very easy to use and I’ve never cut Abby, even when she used to wiggle.

Jennifer, on October 10 2005 at 8:35pm:

a lot of people recommend actually biting your babies nails for them. i know it sounds unorthodox but it works.

Jazz, on October 10 2005 at 8:53pm:

Like previously mentioned, you can usually find special baby nail clippers, they’re quite tiny and cute and perfect for cutting baby’s fingernails. Try cutting them when she’s sleeping maybe?

Chrissy, on October 10 2005 at 9:58pm:

Like, wow, your customers are gems! J/k I can’t believe some people. Okay, the first one: Ummm…. it’s handicapped for a reason. If you aren’t handicapped, you don’t get to park there. AMAZING!!! Some people are so DUUUmmmmmB!

The second customer… that’s just common sense. And thank you for cussing out your child. How sweet and endearing. Wow.

I am so glad I’m not a crappy customer.

Christina, on October 10 2005 at 10:58pm:

hey you should cut them when the baby is sleeping.

about the lady in the handicapped parking… HOW RUDE! ok so she does something dumb…feels stupid for it and then tries to drag u down with her?? wow that makes sense!

the LB needs to take a walk because there is no reason why anyone shopping at target should some how feel like they Oprah or something. Why couldn’t she just go get the costume herself like any other normal person was?? and what kind of person talks to their kid like that? if thats how you are going to treat your kids dont have them.

i applied for a job at target and didnt get it even tho all of my friends did that sucked but i asked for like 2 and a half weeks of vacation time before i even started so i think that had something to do with it lol

i hope your day is better tomorrow!

(sorry my last post had the wrong url)

Hilary, on October 10 2005 at 12:05am:

hmm guess whereever you work things will never be perfect. some people just suck.

supposedly they are going to build a new target on a new road they are putting in my town. the funny part… the road runs like 5 feet from the side of walmart  ares is pretty nice though. i just got back from it.

Heather, on October 10 2005 at 12:08am:

ah it is stories like yours that make me miss my days at “Slave Navy” or more commonly known as Old Navy. I had so many stories similar to yours about irrate customers, etc. while I was working there before I got pregnant. Sometimes I think about going back there, then I remember the awful headaches :headache: I would get from the dumbass people I had to work with or for (customers); and then I snap back to my senses, give my son a hug  and thank my lucky stars that my husband is keeping his end of the deal and letting me be a stay at home mom.

Chelle, on October 10 2005 at 1:52am:

The one thing I never did because I was too afraid I’d hurt Taylor was trim her nails. I left Alan that job! I had my ultrasound a couple days ago and I was totally shocked when i saw the moniter. Jenn, I’m having twins!!:whimper::haha: Talk about unreal.

Jennifer, on October 10 2005 at 2:01am:

Test…

Kylie, on October 10 2005 at 8:25pm:

Ugh, people..

Props to you for staying cheerful.

Gina, on October 10 2005 at 12:05am:

you might know already but this website is talking about you, http://www.thedeadend.net/archives/000325.php, thought I would let you know.

Jennifer, on October 10 2005 at 12:11am:

^ I do know, and honestly, I could care less. People like that thrive off of drama, even if it’s drama they’ve created. They can accuse and claim all they want, but at the end of the day I know that I didn’t say those things, and that’s all that matters.

Jen, on October 10 2005 at 7:16am:

just posted a quickie homebirth birthstory in my blog, since my son is turning 6 years old today. stop by if you get a chance.

Jenny, on October 10 2005 at 11:36am:

Scissors? Holy hell woman. Instead of worrying about long nails you’re gonna be worrying about missing fingers. Use baby clippers. The best is while she is asleep. If she wakes up then just hold her hand firmly. If she fusses…it’s over in a few minutes.

Hilary, on October 10 2005 at 7:05pm:

ya know jenn, i dont wanna start a fight with you cause i like your site, i have no problems with you & i like your blogs but you did tell Allison you hope she miscarries. I read it for myself, nobody told me. i read it like last week & didnt say anything cause i have no problem with you & yeah other people shouldnt be getting into your business but by saying you didnt say it, your lying.

Shaunna, on October 10 2005 at 8:20pm:

Wow, and I thought working at Bob Evans sucked… you got me beat. :) Just popped in to see what’s going on in your life. I love reading your blogs… they’re always a bit hilarious, even when you don’t mean it to be…

Donnan, on October 10 2005 at 1:46am:

I clip Kelsey’s nails while she’s sleeping, which now wakes her up, so instead I do it when she’s got a toy in the other hand, or more often, a bottle or sippy cup to drink out of and hold. She wouldn’t dare put that down, so it’s SO much easier for me then to have a crying, kicking, screaming baby on your hands. Do you have baby nail cutters? those would be a LOT easier than scissors, and you don’t have to worry if they move with those. Good luck!
