The phone call.

I’m a very active screen-a-holic. That is to say, I would be lost without that lovely little feature known as caller ID. I screen every single phone call. If I don’t recognize the number, I let the answering machine get it. Hell, if I recognize the number but don’t want to speak to that particular pain in the ass person, I’ll still let the answering machine get it. My mother knows of my finicky ways, hence why she starts bitching at me via my answering machine to pick up (her number comes up as unknown caller).

So anyway. Yesterday afternoon the phone rings. I check the caller ID – my grandmother’s name & number show up. Not a big deal… if my grandmother wasn’t dead, and if my grandfather wasn’t currently at a nursing home. So needless to say, I go, “Hmm…” and pick up. I say, “Hello?” repeatedly.
Nothing. Just some static on the other end.
Clips of different Twilight Zone episodes flash through my mind, and panic makes me voice go a little higher as I repeatedly say, “Hello?”. Finally I hang up.
I hesitantly dial my mother’s number. I’m scared to death (ha…) that my mother will pick up the phone. Logically, she is the only living person who has access to my grandparent’s house and phone right now. If she were to pick up, I’d probably faint. Because if she were to pick up… who would that leave to be calling me from there? My grandmother?!
She doesn’t answer. A little ripple of relief goes through me. I call her cell. No answer. I finally call back to my grandparent’s house. The answering machine picks up. “Mom? Mom, are you there? For the love of God, if you are, please pick up!”
My mother picks up. She explains what happened (the mute button must have been on, because she was able to hear me when she had called before), I admit my panic and moment of freaking out, we both laugh, and life goes on.

Oh good grief. I would have freaked out. And I do the exact same thing with my callerID. I rarely answer the phone if I were to tell the truth.

I don’t have caller ID at home, and I’m starting to see why that could be a GOOD thing, heh.

Good thing you didn’t lose your head completely and came to the correct logical conclusion. =)

Maybe it was a sign from your Gramma saying that she loves you, ( i mean maybe it was fate that muted the phone call??? )Who knows. But I bet you’ll never forget that day huh?

Haha, that’s really weird and interesting…I have a thing about not answering the phone either, we don’t have caller ID (ugh) so I usually wait until the person leaves a message. My family get pissed off with me and can’t understand why I won’t just answer the phone. Sigh.

Have you ever watched the John Edward show? Once there was this case of two girls who had lost their dad. And shortly after the funeral some foreigners called their house saying “he’s fine, he arrived safely” in some weird accent. They were kind of freaked out, cuase that’s the only thing they said and they hung up immediatly. So John Edward made contact with their father and said “he’s telling me something about a call, by some strange people”. And these girls almost lost it. And they told the story.

I do believe and that stuff so much. Too bad it didn’t happen to you really. It freaks you out when you think about it, but when it happens it’s not scary.
The only similar thing that ever happened to me involved a tissue that appeared folded right next to me when I was crying the death of a friend. I still don’t know if I had a tissue next to me, or if someone else put it there for me…;)

Have you ever seen the movie “White Noise?” The exact same thing happens in that movie in the begining. He gets a call from his deceased wifes cell phone which is in his desk drawer. When he picks up its just static.

Now .. that’s something that’s gotta go to Jerry :D .. Just kidding .. Sounds like scary .. happened to me few times that I would be suprised if some unexpected number calls me. However, as you said .. life goes on.

that’s sounds totally freaky! i’dve probably crapped my pants if that’d happened to me. i’d never have thought of calling to see if it was my mom who’d called.
