The one frustrating part about my job is that someone has to be in the office at all times. 12am, 4am, Christmas, Easter… it doesn’t matter. Somebody has to be there. And if you’re by yourself, you better make damn sure it only takes you a minute or two to run to the bathroom – or you have to hold it until the end of your shift.
This is why I couldn’t leave yesterday to be with Alyssa at the hospital. My co-workers were all far away at superbowl parties (too far to come and cover for me), and the only person who could cover was doing the third shift last night – 11pm ’til 7am. It was be grossly unfair of me to ask that person to work 4pm ’til 7am. But Daniel, luckily, was able to leave work, since there were two other managers there. So even though Mommy couldn’t be there, Alyssa had her daddy, her uncles, and her grandmother. ♥
Alyssa’s finger survived better than I thought it would. Apparently, she was standing by the hinged side of the door when my seven year old brother shut it. He had no idea her hand was near the hinge. It was only when she kept standing by the door and started to cry that my mother realized what was going on, and immediately went to her (thankfully my mother was only five feet away, doing laundry).
Considering that the door was completely shut, her tiny finger could have been severed right off. But amazingly, it fared well. No broken bones, no damaged tissue. She had to have three stitches to close the gash that opened up behind her knuckle (kind of on the side of her finger), and her finger is rather swollen and puffy and bruised, but she’s okay. My mother said that she never even cried when they injected her finger (right into the wound, ahh!) with stuff to deaden it, and never even flinched while they were stitching. My poor, brave baby.
Anyway. To keep the area clean, and to keep Alyssa from picking at the stitches (which she was doing last night), I have a bandaid around her finger, and then gauze wrapping that finger to the next one (for stability), and then wrapped around her hand and wrist. And over that I have a sock. Heh. It sounds excessive, but even with the stitches the wound is still open, and the risk of infection is definitely there, especially since she’s at the age where she’s investigating everything with her hands. I check every little bit to make sure that the wrapping isn’t too tight, and that her finger looks okay.
Amazingly, it doesn’t seem to be bothering her much, if at all. She went right to sleep last night, and slept until about noon today. She was in a good mood when she got up, ate well, played, cuddled with Mommy to watch Teletubbies, and is now down for a nap. I feel like I could take one myself…
When I was pregnant with Alyssa I took belly pictures starting when I found out I was pregnant. I think I took some this time around, but I haven’t really started to show until about two weeks ago. Being fat already has its perks – it’s a bit easier to hide a pregnancy. ;) But I don’t think I can really hide any more – this baby is lower (much lower! Look at how my pants are sticking out!) and sticking out a bit more. Eh, see for yourself:
…I look like a weeble.

OUCH that’s sounds sore! Ah the old chicken pox trick… tape socks on the hands LOL! Hope she gets better soon…
You’re looking great! (And you don’t look like a weeble… God I remember those!)
omg…your daughter is really really brave for what she had to endure at the ER. i shudder just imagining that happening to my kid when i have one!
Glad that Alyssa is doing okay. It is amazing how resilient kids that age are.
I never did the belly picks with Jonathan. In fact, I think there is all of ONE picture of me while pregnant, and I am sitting down so you can barely tell. Maybe next time around *shrugs*
aw thats sweet that she was so brave ;) I’D have been the one freaking out and crying if it were my kid. ;(
very cute belly picture…i love pregnant bellies. but i am telling ya, you’re having a boy!…
Well at least this time it seems your boobs are not as huge like last time. I remember you saying what a killer! You look great! :-)
LOL! No, this time I’ve managed to keep a leash on ‘em. ;) They’re almost at my pre-Alyssa-pregnancy size, and so far they’re staying that way! -Jenn
Poor Alyssa
But she must have been really brave at the hospital.
I don’t think you look like a Weeble, your belly looks cute.
Oooh maybe that means it’s a boy this time?
I hope Alyssa’s finger heals well, the same thing happened to me a few years ago – my stepsister shut the door, and my finger was in the hinge bit. In the end my whole nail fell off! – gros! but it grew back, and I had to have massive bandage around my little finger. The worst part is that i got told off at school for having messy handwriting that week!! Grr! Belly pics are great, its fun to see the difference!
I would have flipped if it was my baby. And to hell with staying at work. If no one could have came in I would have turned off the lights locked everything up and put up the closed sign. And if my boss had a problem with that I would have told him to kiss my ass.
Ooooh poor baby!!!!
I’m glad she’s ok!
I’m glad to hear that Alyssa’s finger wasn’t broken. *phew* Poor little baby.
‘
I didn’t start showing till around 5-6 months pregnant, and I only have one picture of my belly… at like 38 weeks, lmao.
Jenn, can you please respond to the emails I sent you? I did the referral thing for you awhile back and was your last referral you needed — I just got an email today saying you was verified (so I assume you will be getting your gift soon), but I still haven’t heard back from you. Please email me asap as I have sent several emails.
Did you get the e-mail I just sent this afternoon? It was sent to multiple recipients, so it’s possible it hit your spam folder (it hit mine). Let me know! -Jenn
Ooh belly
yay !!
I did’nt really comment on the whole ER situation, but seriously, no job is worth it who wont let you go and be by the side of your child, especially in an emergency situation. What about a manager/boss, superior, it is there job to cover in emergencies. I would have left if it were my child, nothing will come before my child.
Aww Poor thing! I’m glad she’s arlight
