A day at the Renaissance Faire.

Daniel, Ryan and I went to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire on Sunday. We left Alyssa with my mother because we didn’t think she’d handle being out all day and evening too well, but I think next year we’ll take her along. But from what my mother said, she had tons of fun there with her, my brothers and my mother’s cats, so I don’t feel too bad for leaving her behind.

We were there all day and all evening. We saw a few humorous – and definitely adult oriented! – plays and skits, Daniel played a few games, and we browsed through many shops. I tried out a game too – the crossbow. The first arrow hit the wood way above the target, the second spiraled through the air and hit the ground, and the third just hit the ground. This officially proves that I couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. Am I good or what?
Daniel, two other guys and a girl did the axe throw. She was the only one to get an axe to stick in the wall.

We entered Ryan in the children’s Halloween costume competition, and he won an honorable mention! I expected as much, as it wouldn’t really be fair to choose a baby (who is almost always cute and adorable) over a child. Daniel was ecstatic over this, and I was pretty excited too. He used to go to the Renaissance Faire a lot when he was younger, so now he has another sweet memory to tuck away – his two month old son being acknowledged by the Queen. ;)

Let me tell you, if I had bought every single thing I wanted, we would have spent close to $500. No lie. But we’re going to head back next year with a couple hundred or so to blow, so in the meantime I made do with gypsy horns and a neat hair accessory:

Ryan, of course, ate with gusto every chance he got. Thank god for the sling! It makes walking and nursing and browsing and nursing very, very easy. Most of the time people didn’t even notice what I was doing. What was funny were the ones that did notice. You other breastfeeding mothers probably know what I’m talking about. They look over, look away, then look again. They nudge the person beside them, who looks. They nudge the person next to them (if there is one), and so on and so forth.
I found this a bit ironic, considering we’re all running around a huge place set up to resemble a village right out of the Renaissance period, complete with men and women dressed in authentic Renaissance garb. We’re talking gowns, corsets, bodices, kilts, tights, knights, breasts spilling over their confines, crotches outlined in tight pants, etc. Yet a single breast – with a baby attached – is the real spectacle. Oh well. I smiled at a few, waved at another, and asked a particularly insistent gawker if she’d like to take a picture, as I’d be willing to pose.

I tried on a bodice and a corset. The bodice did the best with lifting the girls up and out, as the corset, while longer in length and better with definition, was a bit loose in the top (the designer admitted he was having a bit of trouble with those). Come Christmas I’m going to e-mail the designer my measurements and have a custom one made. Drool.

This sign never ceases to amuse me with its cuteness:

Gosh darn it. I just re-read over this post and realized that – once again! – I mentioned my children, my breasts and breastfeeding. I even posted pictures of said children (well, one of them), my breasts and me breastfeeding. How can I ever make it up to my lovely readers?

*cough* I think I’ll start by wrapping this up, as it’s a cold, rainy day and a nice lunch of grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup sounds really appealing. Later gators!

  1. The fair looks like ityou and Daniel had alot of fun, I have never seen any renaissance faire around in my area.

I did’nt realize that during the renaissance time they took major credit cards. *hehe* That sign is great.

I love rainy day grilled cheese sandwiches, have you ever tried adding cream cheese to it before you cook it? It’ is delicious!

mmm, grilled cheese… can I come for lunch? :P

I’ve never been to a ren faire, but I think I’d have way too much fun. Especially trying on a corset! I think that need to go on my life’s to-do list.

Looks like you had a good time! I like purple horns (I think they are horns?) and that sign is pretty comical ;) haha.

There’s only one Ren Faire in SC that I know about and it looks so lame that I’ve never considered going, but I know they have a few great ones in NC, I just have to decide if it’s worth the travel. They look fun to me, but Chris just laughs and tells me I’m out of my mind.

We have a Renaissance Festival here – although I haven’t been there since I was younger. It’s probably pretty similar to what you went to, I’d imagine.

I’m glad you guys had fun. Too bad Alyssa had to miss it – of course, kids to tend to get cranky and tired at those type of events. I took AJ to the fair the last 2 years, and he handled it pretty well, until he started getting tired. I’m sure next year she’ll be able to enjoy it and do more. Of course, then you may have to leave Ryan behind instead. hehe.
