For shits and giggles I looked up some of my older domains (going back to 2001 – 2002!) on archive.org. It’s interesting to see how the times have changed and what was the “thing” then is definitely not the “thing” now.
For instance, do you remember any of the following?
- Tagboards
- Guestbooks
- Greymatter
- Black backgrounds with size 8px gray text on left aligned layouts
- Making comments links look like this: c#mments where # was the amount of comments; e.g. c8mments
- Pet cam pictures and pet portals
- Navigation in the form of numbers; e.g. 001, 002, 003
- Linking people under the heading “siblings” or “sibs”

This is so cool! I’ve seen archives.org a few times before on google but I never knew it was this awesome. It’s fun to look back.
Hehe, I’ve done that a few times myself. It’s fun to go back and see how far I have come :P. I remember all of that stuff though hehe. I remember I even had a “simple php tagboard” for download that alot of people came to my site to DL ^.^
I remember ALL of that except for the “sibs” thing, I must have missed that fad! XD
But omg, I never knew that site existed! I just spent a few minutes looking up my own site and WOW I can’t believe all that stuff is still on the web! It’s so embarrassing! XD My site used to be SO “typical” teen blog…but I agree, it’s interesting to see how things evolve, hehe. :D
“Making comments links look like this: c#mments where # was the amount of comments; e.g. c8mments”
LOL some people still do that.
I remember all of those things! It’s odd how the net changes and how you don’t notice things fading out. I look back at all of those things and think WTF were we all thinking???
hah hah. good old greymatter.
I used to do the comments thing and the navigation in the form of numbers.
Oh and greymatter used to be everywhere. WP is totally the greymatter of today.
Some popular fads I remember are:
Transparent scrollbars and left-sided scrollbars.
Navigation consisting of Me, You, WWW, X or Clear.
Side scroller layouts and pop-up layouts.
Elite cliques, splash pages with “Viewing Requirements”, and Review/Award sites.
Hahahaha, I remember all of those.
I’d totally forgotten greymatter even existed until someone mentioned it in passing in a blog I read about a month ago.
Thank you so much for this link! I looked up my old webpages and man, it took me back. Stories I’d forgotten. Things that were important then that I laugh at now. Things I thought were lost, found again, Wow, like a time machine.
I’m still a proud owner of a pet and cam portal, thank you, lol. Remember those grungy scribble layouts and swirly brushes? Some people are still doing that, ha. I’ve come across a site that uses GM and I was thinking “omg is that safe to use?”.
Yes, I still remember that! Its amazing how time flys and what new technology we have.
lol I looked my old site the other day too.
It was so weird. I remember stuff like that, haha.
Oh my god my websites were horrendous in those days. Content in 150×150 iframes and links showing nothing but numbers or song lyrics.
Jen! I don’t know how I lost you, but I did for a while. I’ll have to come back around and catch up later on tonight. I just wanted to ask- (through comments because I can’t find an email link?) – did you modify a theme for this layout or create it yourself? It is SO nice! And clean! It’s really pretty.
I’ll be back, congratulations on all of your recent life changes! xo A
Oh my god, I did every single one of those things. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. I looked at one of my old sites the other day, too, and about half my posts were blind links to other sites, usually set to pseudo swear words because it probably made me feel even cooler.
