Once they start they never stop

Ashley’s remark about Jordan and numbers got me thinking about Alyssa and her progress with speaking. Four months ago we were lucky if we got two words out of her. Now?

Numbers: one, two, fee, four, five, sick, seben, eight, nine, ten. She loves nine and ten. Her counting typically goes like this: “one two fee four five sick seben nine ten nine ten NINE TEN NINE TEN NINE!”

Letters: a, b, c, e, i

Shapes: circle, twiangle, swfare, star

Colors: blue, gween, orag, red, lellow, pur-ple (she really emphasizes the p sound)

Foods: kicken, dot dogs, burgers, ‘tatoes, fweh fries, corn, gween beans, cawwots, brocki, cheese, milk, juishe, ce-yel, nana, bapple, bapplesauce, panpakes

She knows her kitchen utensils, items of clothing, wipes, bath, water, soap, bubbles, potty, flush, toothbrush, toothpaste, paper towel, napkin, toilet paper, toys, blocks, ‘mote (remote), ‘mercial (commercial), vd (dvd), Wyan (Ryan), Wy-Wy (Ry-Ry), bweast (breast, lol), and all of her body parts. Well, almost all. Everything in the diaper area is her butt. Heh. I think we’ll have to work on that!

It’s amazing how many words kids learn in their first couple years.

  3. sounds like she might have to do “speech” when she gets older if she still isn’t pronouncing those “r’s”, “thr’s”, & “v’s” by the time she starts public schools.

Just a random tidbit I learned in cognitive development lecture yesterday is… (chart form is easier to read!)
    12 – 16 months, infants learn 0.3 words/day
    16 – 23 months, infants learn 0.8 words/day
    23 – 30 months, infants learn 1.6 words/day
    2.5 – 6 years, kids learn 3.6 words/day
    6 – 8 years, kids learn 6.6 words/day
    and 8 – 10 years, kids learn 12.1 words/day
So expect fascinating language acquisition for years to come! :D It’s amazing how much they pack in their brains.

Every kid under the sun says “lellow.” But not my daughter… Oh no. She can actually say the Y sound, but she cannot for the life of her say L. So it’s yewwow. Everything with the L sound gets transferred to a W. Silly children!

Once you get over the fascination of her learning words, you will be fascinated at how she puts sentences together, or even how she uses words in context. My daughter is 3 and she told me the other day she couldn’t snap her fingers because her fingers were too slippery… I thought to myself “how the hell does she know what slippery means?”

Kids are amazing at this age. You have a lot to look forward to!
