When I picked out Kirin as a wedding anniversary present to my husband, I picked out another kitten to give to my mother. The cat owner, her son and myself all came to the conclusion that the kitten was a girl. Definitely a girl!
So I presented the girl kitty to my mother, who named her Jewel.
Jewel is now seven months old. And, after a closer look, is actually a Jules. With a rather small boy package. We didn’t realize she was a he until the testicles appeared. Needless to say, we’re all feeling pretty stupid. But we’re hopeful that Jules‘ disposition will improve, now that we’re calling him by a male name.
I should be in bed, but I’m wide awake. Perhaps that three hour nap I took with Alyssa this afternoon has something to do with that… Anyway. Now that I’ve fuglified my site by removing its CSS, I figured I’d blog again and then browse around Lavish, and get back to work on Mamahood (it has been a work in progress for the last month).
I’m also making pancakes. I was reminiscing about my grandmother and thought about her delicious pancake recipe, and decided to make some. Actually, I’m making a double batch, so that there will be plenty left over to freeze. I always found it odd that her pancake recipe called for sour cream, of all things. Then, about a month back, I was looking around some recipe sites, and stumbled across this interesting tidbit:
Sour cream is a suitable substitute for buttermilk.
Really…? Maybe that’s why my grandmother’s pancake recipe uses sour cream. Perhaps, decades ago, she went to make pancakes for her husband, realized she was out of buttermilk, and in a panic began leafing through her recipe books, and possibly calling her mother, and between the two found out that she could use sour cream in its place. Then the modified pancake recipe went over so well that she decided to keep using it.
Do you have any recipes with non-standard ingredients in them?

Yay for the new cat.
Hmm sour cream instead of buttermilk. I haven’t heard that one yet.
I’ve heard of it, I’ve seen people put sour cream in well alot of things.. I like it!
Though pancakes just seems odd, but I know I’ve seen a recipie that called for it in a breakfast dish … now your making me hungry!
I know that Josh’s grandmother makes a sour cream cake. I was hesitant to try it at first because I thought it sounded gross (come on, sour cream goes on baked potatoes and stuff – real food!) But it was really sweet and moist – it was delicious! I’m thinking about asking her for the recipe.
Aww, I didn’t know my cat was a girl for a while. I named her Moko and even though it could go either way, it sounds like a boy’s name. It’s hard to tell when they are so young.
In many baked goods – like cakes and cookies, you can use applesauce instead of veggie oil. Pretty healthful tip, really. When you replace oil with applesauce in cookies, though, you gotta be sure that you’re going after a chewy cookie. You wouldn’t be able to make a crisp cookie with applesauce – and in that case you’d have to stick with oil. And you can also do part oil/part applesauce to start with.. to get used to the idea/process.
Lots of these recipes, to be honest. I eat local traditional cakes and so some recipes include Coconut milk, Gula Melaka (a certain type of sugar that is heavenly)
I can send you these recipes if you want them
Best thing ever to put sour cream in? Macaroni, bitch! Mac & Cheese, seriously, it’s heaven. I’m fat, but it’s heaven, lol.
I put cheese nips in my meatloaf ;)
I’m southern and one of the things we cook quite often is cornbread. Some people put mayonnaise in the batter and it makes it taste really good. My hubby won’t eat it if he knows it has mayo in it. For some reason that just grosses him out LOL..
i have a male kitten hesjust 6 weeks old and he has the biggest testicles it was really obvious he was a boy.
