The quest for the right digital camera

I’m torn between the Canon Rebel and the Nikon D40/DX40. I’ve ogled the cameras, drooled over the accessories and eyeballed the specs until my eyes are ready to cross, but I’m still torn. More than anything, I want to read actual digital camera reviews in which the actual articles are written by people who have reviewed the camera in question. And by review I mean these people should taken the time to try out the camera themselves, using a variety of settings, lenses, lighting, people, etc. I want more than just a standard blurb on the capabilities of a camera. I want to see those capabilities in action.

Thank goodness for sites like testfreaks.com. TF.com is comprised of people who have actually used the products in question, so they can tell you much more than an advertisement ever could.

That said, I’m still torn between the Rebel and the Nikon D40. I think it’ll eventually come down to price – which one can I get a better deal on?

I’m sure you’ve already done this, but when I was looking to get an SLR I hit up flickr and searched for the cameras in tags since lots of people like to tag their images with the camera/model. The only bad thing about that is with all the different lenses and what not people use, it’s easy to see an image and say WOAH I WANT THAT ONE! When they really have some fancy smancy lens.

I decided to go with the Canon Rebel Xti and I looove it. I don’t have any fancy lenses yet and I still don’t even fully know what I’m doing but I can still manage to get some great shots.

    Good luck :)

I just bought the Canon Rebel xti (the 10mp one) and I LOVE IT! I know the Nikon is a good camera too. But I always wanted the Rebel and it was on sale at Best Buy. You can also get it from Amazon for a reasonable price. I dont have any of the fancy lenses yet. I am just using the one that came with it. I bought a macro lense off of ebay for 30 bucks. Be careful if your considering buying the actual camera off of ebay. Canon wont recongnize the warranty unless its purchased from an authorized dealer and there is A LOT Of grey market stuff on ebay. I’m sure you already know this.

Right now I’m thinking about getting the Nikon D40 or the Nikon70, I can’t decide and most importantly I can’t think of where I’m supposed to get this hell of a boatload of money from that you need to purchase one of those babies. There is always so many other things that need to be payed for! But yeah, I guess a Nikon is always a good choice. :)

;) I have the XTi and I feel like it’s become an extension of myself. I *heart* it so much. I suggest getting the body and a nice multipurpose lens (my first was the Canon 17-88mm) that’s good for portrait shot but still has a decent zoom to it. I second Michelle, the best site I’ve found BY FAR is http://dpreview.com because it’s a has so much useful info.

Check out the glossary. Helped me out A LOT. Also, here’s the review for the XTi: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos400d/

I’m not sure what you should go with; I’ve always been an Olympus user myself. One really good thing to check, Jenn- is flickr. You can search for pictures taken with certain cameras… that’s how I wound up with my current model because I was so blown away by what I saw people do with it on flickr. :)

  9. Bought the D40 around 3 mths or so. I chose the Nikon instead of the Canon equivalent as the camera’s build is more satisfying (to hold, to touch, to use). All in all you can’t go wrong with either, but having a D40 with a all-purpose 18-200mm VR lense, D40 gave me the edge.

    Cheers ;)
