Earlier today Alyssa, Ryan and I hung out in Alyssa’s room, reading books, playing with blocks and balls. I had my camera with me, and had finished taking several photos of both of them when Alyssa decided she wanted to take a photo. She carefully maneuvered my Nikon D40 in her little hands and snapped this photo of me. Crappy subject aside, the photo is actually pretty decent, if off centered. Since Alyssa seemed genuinely interested in taking pictures, I took back my $900 camera and gave her my Kodak EasyShare Z740 to try out. She ran around all afternoon taking photos of everything and everyone, including the cats.
I went ahead and created a Flickr account for her, and uploaded some of her better photos there. She helped with the descriptions of the photos.
Who knows? Maybe this is the beginning of an interest in photography and digital cameras for my little girl.
Anyway, I’ve had my weekend of play and relaxation. I need to knuckle down and get my work done! Dan and I have already picked out the backyard playground set we want to buy for Alyssa and Ryan, and it’s not going to pay for itself!

Aww that’s so cute!
I love that photo of her with the camera.
When I was visiting my niece, she was playing with my cell phone camera and the Nikon. She held it really good too. Maybe we will buy her a kiddy camera. She loved taking photos and they come out really nice too! How odd!
Aww. She looks too cute with that camera.
Alyssa takes some pretty nice photos!
She took really good photos!
Who knows? Your little girl could grow up to be a famous photographer because you’re encouraging her like this.
I love when parents are supportive of their kids doing artsy things, even if the kids don’t necessarily understand the artsy-ness of their stuff yet.
You should put up all the pictures, not just the ones that you think are the better ones, or at least get her to pick. I always enjoy seeing though the “eyes of a child” …
Great shots Lissy!
too cute! i guess she sees you taking pictures all the time and wants to be ‘like mummy’
I think that is a good thing to let her do… it will help her become creative and she’ll have that spark in her for life. I used to love to play with my cameras when I was younger, always taking pictures.
Not bad, Alyssa! That’s so awesome that you’re encouraging her. Hehe. She can help chronicle her OWN life! Haha.
Aww, what a cutie. I’m sure she’ll have photo-taking mastered within a few years. :D
Wow, Alyssa can take better pictures than me!!
Congratulations to Alyssa. Maybe she will end up as photo happy as her mother if she starts early ;)
I love her facial expression on the one picture. Almost like a real photographer.. “Now give me facial action. C’mon! Smile for the camera”. Cute!
Mothers who feed the interests of their children who come out on top, but it’s the children who really win. I know my mother often ignored and even scoffed at my art, and I ended up losing that talent at a very early age. Continue to encourage her, and you’ll be my hero. *smooches*
Awwww…she’s adorable! Do I sense super photographer extraordinare in her future?
You might be off-centre in that photo, but maybe she was following the law of thirds .. you do seem to be taking up 1/3rd of the frame.
Instinct?
If you ever feel like you are a bad parent, return to this post! This is such an amazing thing. I know parents who would have snatched the camera out of their 3 yr old’s hands, telling them that it was for “Adults only!” or some crap like that. Kudos to you for paying attention to and supporting her interest in photography…She may just be the youngest Flickr member ever!
Wow, that is a very good first photo! and looking sooo cute
that is such a cute idea!!!! she’s a doll. i looked at her pictures and they’re not bad at all!
not bad at all!!! her pictures are great!
crap…i thought my comment didn’t go through, sorry for the dups.
