No more turkey for another year

While the rest of you ran around like chickens without their heads and battled customers, shopping carts and harried employees, I enjoyed a nice morning of sleeping in.

I never did like turkey. I eat some of it on Thanksgiving, because it would be very un-American to do otherwise, but that’s it. Thank goodness, 364 turkey-free days to enjoy. And probably half that long before I even want to buy stuffing or the ingredients for green bean casserole, let alone eat stuffing or green bean casserole!

Anyway, our Thanksgiving was nice. We had a good time with Dan’s family, and had a good time at our house with my family yesterday night.

Per our Thanksgiving tradition, we went over to Dan’s place of employment to put up Christmas decorations. Normally we stop by as we’re running back from the visits with Dan’s family (we usually hit up three different homes; this year we lucked out and just went to his aunt’s house) and before we have to get home to cook dinner for ourselves and my family. But this year we got a later start with Thanksgiving, so we decided to do the decorating after my family left last night.

Alyssa and Ryan were pooped out from all of the running around and visiting yesterday, and both passed out around 8:00pm last night. We got them up at 11:00pm, as there was no way we would let them sleep through the night and pop up at dawn. After they were more awake and ate dinner, we got them changed into play clothes, packed a bag of toys, and headed over to where Dan works. It was 1am when we started, and after several snags*, we got done at 4am and went home, where we all conked out and slept until after noon today.

The snags: First there was the huge surprise when we unpacked last year’s Christmas decorations and discovered almost everything but the really crap stuff (most of which should have been tossed out last year) gone. We were PISSED. We spent about $75 last year and took the time to pick out nice, coordinating, tasteful and cute decorations to use, and then spent quite a while arranging scenes and putting things up. Apparently the employee that was directed to take the decorations down not only took them down, but threw them out or, more likely, given the quality of what there was, stole them.

Then there was the string of Christmas lights that didn’t work. Leave it to me to not bother to test the lights before plugging them in. So, that meant a 1:00am trip to my most loathed store, but the only one that was open and had what we would need: Wal-Mart. I spent almost $40 of our money (not company money, as we did last year) to buy more Christmas lights, more Christmas tree ornaments, and various figurines and decorations.

2:00am, and another trip to Wal-Mart was required, as yet another string of lights decided it didn’t feel like working.

After that, thankfully, everything went smoothly. We were there for three hours, and Alyssa and Ryan were great. They ate cookies, drank juice, had TV dinners and fruit cups around 2:30am, and ran around, played and “helped” me decorate. It wasn’t until 3:30am that they started to get tired and cranky, so I hurried up and swept up the mess of ornament/glitter/snow dust, and then sat and cuddled them both while Dan finished up some last minute stuff.

Today has been slowwwwwwwwwww. Dan is at work, and I’ve been playing with the kids for most of the day, and washing up the pots and pans left from last night’s dinner. We’ve all been laying around like a bunch of lazy slugs.

Dan has a eight day vacation starting tomorrow, but he won’t be here for half of it. He is leaving early in the morning to go with his family on one of their redneck hunting trips. I’m glad he’s going, as he needs the time off and deserves to spend it with his family. But just the same, I’m going to miss him. I sound like such a whiny little bitch for saying this, but I hate being alone. And I really, REALLY hate sleeping alone. :( Dan is going to be gone until Wednesday, and by then I’ll be going a little crazy. Not just from going without affection/sex/companionship/a warm body to sleep next to, but from being alone with the kids, 24/7. Ack!

I got to hear bitchings about you guys this AM. :P WTF did you spend your own money for? Fuck that! I woulda taken it outta company money. Do you honestly believe the big cheese woulda spent his own money on it? Hell no he woulda spent company money and even write up the mileage for driving up the road :P

  2. I forgot to mention that Dan did decide to go ahead and leave the receipt showing what I spent and reimburse us from the company money. I believe “oh, fuck it!” were Dan’s exact words.

You’re not the only one who hates turkey. I’m not a big fan of it, and my sister literally avoided it. She cooked it, cut it, but didn’t eat it. Then, according to my mom, proceeded to throw the rest of it out. *rolls eyes* And I love stuffing, but for the first time ever, I didn’t enjoy it at all–it had more salt in it than I’d like.

I’d be pissed knowing that some fool stole $75 worth of decorations. Knowing me, I’d probably demand a home search. But that’s just me being evil. :P

Ohh turkey is my favorite :( We have tons of leftovers and I’m so excited because I don’t get turkey any other time of the year! I can’t believe someone would steal decorations. Lame-o!!! Hopefully you guys get paid back from them ASAP. I also know how you feel about the being alone :( It’s the worst.

Bleh. I hate turkey and since it’s just me, I fixed myself a chicken breast. LOL Yeppers, I am un-American on Thanksgiving.

I love turkey, though I usually eat it in the form of lunch meat, so Thanksgiving is always good. It’s actually home cooked turkey!! That’s neat that y’all decorated Dan’s work…James needs something in his office…maybe I’ll do a little decorating in there….

  8. Happy Belated Thanksgiving…. I wish I would have gone your route to stay in yesterday, but I braved the shopping adventures! I think the only store I waited in long lines for was Kohl’s & The Children’s Place. :)

Hope you enjoy the little bit of time you get with Dan on his vacation! Hope he has a great time hunting.

  9. The only place that really had a line was Target, to my surprise. That freakin’ line wrapped all the way around the back of the store and back to the front again. Ridiculous! After we walked around to see just how long the line was (mom and I were curious), we walked right back out. hehe I can get wrapping paper ANY time, and I’ll pay the extra 10 bucks to make up for the savings on toys. lol

I love turkey as long as it’s cooked correctly. It can’t be dry. Has to be flavorful (stuffed with onion and garlic and herbs). My mom is usually the responsible party when it comes to the turkey, and I do the ham.

And we’ll do this whole thing all over again for Christmas. Except I’m sure there’ll be a fried turkey there since we’ll be at my aunt’s house. Yum!
