An experience not to be repeated

I slept for maybe two hours this morning. And I say this morning because I was such a nervous wreck that I stayed up until almost 5am watching Nip/Tuck, until exhaustion finally eased me into oblivion. And because misery loves company and Dan loves me, he stayed up with me. I never once asked him to, and several times I told him to go to bed, since he would be the one driving and taking care of Alyssa and Ryan today. One more reason why I love him so much. ♥

Going under general anesthesia was a breeze, even though that aspect of the surgery was the one that freaked me out the most (don’t ask me why, because I don’t know to tell you!). One minute I was talking to the anesthesiologist about toddlers and the oral surgeon was walking in and saying hello, and the next I was waking up and being asked to walk to the recovery room. With the assistance of two dental assistants I did, somehow managing to crack a joke about needing four of them to help me up if I fell. I don’t know if they understood what I said, considering my face was swollen up and I had gauze shoved inside my mouth. I don’t know how long I was in surgery, or how long I was in the recovery room, but we got home around 10:45am, and after taking a Vicodin and changing the already soaked gauze wads, I went to sleep, and didn’t stir until almost 3pm, and went back to bed not long after.
Dan, unfortunately, had to go into work tonight after all, so I have been on my own with Alyssa and Ryan since a little after 5pm. It hasn’t been too bad. The numbness wore off when I woke up the second time, and if I move my mouth too much or talk more than a few words I can really feel the pain (a five minute conversation with my mom earlier had me near tears). Hence why I haven’t eaten in close to twenty-four hours. The concept of chewing is one I don’t want to think about right now. I’m quite content to sip water, take Vicodin every four hours and live off of my amply supply of body fat, thank you very much.

The reason I had all four of my wisdom teeth out under general anesthesia, as opposed to local or a bazillion shots of Novocaine (that’s what Dan had two years ago when his came out), was because I not only had a severely impacted wisdom tooth, but that tooth was laying right on top of a nerve. The dentist and oral surgeon worried that a sudden move or jerk on my part during the procedure could damage that nerve. So, it was out like a light for me. And honestly, while I was not relishing the thought of being put under general anesthesia, I thought that to be a better alternative to being awake during such a procedure!

Anyway, Alyssa and Ryan have been great tonight. No messes, no loud screeching or temper tantrums, ate dinner quite nicely, and are vegging out right now with crayons and coloring books (Ryan is eating some of the crayons, but they’re non-toxic ;) ). As soon as I put them to bed – soon, as they popped up kind of early and never napped – I’m going to veg while I wait for my mom to show up. She’s picking up my prescription of antibiotics, and going grocery shopping for me. :)

I thought you were just getting just that one pulled, but after I viewed your description under Flicker I see that you had all 4 pulled. It took me about a month to get back to eating solid (crunchy) foods. With others and perhaps yourself, it might be a shorter time. Everyone has their own pain threshold. One of the worst parts even when I was high on my pain medication was that I still couldn’t eat anything with acidic juices simply because the corners of my mouth formed painful and open blisters that hurt like a major bitch. Keep your fingers crossed that you don’t develop those blisters. In about a week, your oral surgeon (he’s actually a dentist whose specialty is oral surgery thus his title of of oral surgeon) should have set up a time for you to come in for a follow up visit where he will inspect the areas where those teeth were extracted and give you a syringe with strict instructions to squirt warm salty water in all 4 extraction sites.

  2. See! I told you all would be fine! ;) Honestly, going under general anesthesia freaked me out too. But one second the surgeon was joking with me about how many shots I could take and the next second I was waking up all done.

Hope recovery is speedy and the kids continue to cooperate while you do. :)

  3. PS – Don’t pay attention to horror stories. Everybody I know that had all four pulled were back to semi-solids in a few days and full solids within a week.

    heh

Glad everything went well & that Alyssa and Ryan are being good for you tonight! I can understand being afraid of the anesthesia. When I was 15 I had to have surgery on one eye (long story) and I was sooo afraid of going to sleep and possibly not waking up. Thankfully, it was a breeze, just as yours seemed to be :). Now hopefully you’ll be able to eat tomorrow!

You don’t have to eat with your pills? I wasn’t able to eat semi-solids until a week after the surgery. The first few days I suggest eating only pudding and jello, work your way to scrambled eggs, then seriouly soggy super small pieces of pancake (though make sure you rinse with warn salt water really well (no swishing, just tilt your head from side to side) so you don’t get a dry socket. I was back on solids in two weeks once the stitches came out. Seriously though, invest in jello. Its good when you’re that empty.

It’s good you have so many people helping you out. I ate nothing but mashed potatos, soup, and carnation instant breakfast for about two or three days but after that it didnt hurt to much to eat them, it was just a matter of being able to open my mouth wide enough to get food in.

Hopefully you will heal much better than I did though.

Well I’m glad it’s over and all is well, but damn from the looks of the post op photos you are a trooper!

  9. Ouuuuuuuuuch. I just looked at the pics and DAMN GIRL. You are swollen. I hope you have a quick recovery.

Apple sauce is amazing when you can’t eat solids. And, if you’re weird like me, soaking croûtons in apple sauce to make them soggy enough to eat is also delicious. (but like I said, I’m weird.)

I hope you have a speedy recovery!
