I can’t keep quiet about this

I have a complaint in regards to incorrect word usage. In these instances, the spelling of the word may be correct, the grammar may be correct, but the word chosen for that particular context is certainly not correct. A few examples:

I’m kind of weary of online sellers that don’t have good feedback.

In this instance, the speaker probably means he/she is wary of those online sellers. He/she isn’t tired (weary) of online sellers without good feedback; he/she is cautious and not trusting of them.

Awe! Your new puppy is so cute!

I somehow doubt that the speaker was overwhelmed with her feelings of admiration (awe) for the new puppy. Instead, I’m sure the speaker was overcome with the urge to gush over the cuteness of the puppy. As in, you know, aw!

My third example comes from something I saw today on WGAL.com. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, and clearly demonstrates the misuse of one in particular, I’ll post it, and skip right over a quoted example:

WGAL.com

To peak is to reach the highest crest or point of something. A mountain, a point in your career, an orgasm, the usage of electricity during the scorching summer months. Had the caption been written as Sun peaking above the clouds in Manheim, I would have conceded and agreed that it was acceptable. But you can’t peak through something. You can, however, peek through it.

(And while we’re on the subject of this caption – why is cloud capitalized? “Cloud” in this caption references the cloud, not a person, a place or a title.)

Feel free to share any word usage pet peeves you have. :)

  1. “Your” and “You’re” are a major pet peeve of mine. Major.

I get irritated by your and you’re also, as well as there, their, and they’re.

I can’t really complain because I am guilty of incorrect word usage and grammar. However TXT talk drives me up the wall.

  4. I am greatly annoyed by words like “kewliez” and “hawt.” I’d also have to agree with antigone and Kelley about your, you’re, there, their, and they’re.

I can’t really talk, because I don’t have the best grammar. But, I definitely agree with Kelley’s contribution.

Ever notice how FireFox, spell check is a bit wacky!? Apparently, “Okay” is incorrect.

    Your and you’re!

I want to slap some people. You see uni students (heck, I think even my mother still does this) who still get confused. It’s so easy to remember!

And a lot is meant to be separate. Same with at least. But don’t see that much either.

But I must admit I love how firefox has a word check now, my spelling isn’t always up to scratch.

I like the Firefox spell check, saves me a few times. I get annoyed with your/you’re and they’re/their/there as well. I also get annoyed with people who seem to be incapable of putting in periods, commas and apostrophes where they belong.

  8. While I can’t talk because I don’t have the best grammar. I get annoyed with people that write like DeEz LiKe OMg.

I also loathe “awe” used in place of “aww”. I’m not a big fan of completely horrible grammar, such as, “I’ve did” or “You seen that”.

I’m not exactly the most grammatically correct person on the planet, but I try to at least sound somewhat intelligent when I speak.

I get annoyed by spelling and grammar mistakes, too.

They don’t bother me. I dunno. Some people just have a hard time with it like some people have with math.

I saw “aweeee” in that context too..but pronounced like..”AW WEEEEEEEEE” instead of “awe” as in “I was in total awe standing before the pearly gates on my knees!”

One thing that really pisses me off..and I hate saying this because..im not a grammar nazi and I never use proper punctuation..but..I HATE HATE HATE when people dont know the difference between youre and your.

    I hate when people say:
“I seen that yesterday on tv” instead of “I saw that yesterday.”

    Some others:
    they’re and their and there
    too and to
    you’re and your

Bad spelling and grammer really turn me off. If a post/blog is full of gramatical errors, I won’t even read it.

I am a grammar snob also. I’m sure that I’ve made mistakes though. Sometimes the English language can be so confusing. As far as spelling goes though, I’m a major freak about that. If I don’t know how to spell a work, I will look it up. Some people just can’t be bothered to do that.

I haaaaaate it when people say “i could care less” in regards to something.

The correct term is “I could NOT care less” because, you simply have no lesser care than the problem at hand. to say that you could care less suggests that the problem is somewhat meaningful to you AND that there could be worse problems.

    -_-
