My grandfather is still in the hospital. For monitoring, and while they work out some weird issue with his insurance. Apparently they’re not wanting to pay for him to return to the assisted living home he is at? So they need to find another one for him to go to? Which doesn’t make sense, because I thought he was paying out of his own money for that each month. Ergh. There is a huge issue with his supposed “guardians” mis-managing his money. The only thing they’ve managed to do so far is cause all of his utilities to be shut off and go into default and collections, and his car to be re-possessed (January). We have a lawyer who is going to be fighting this, but until my grandfather is released from the hospital, we can’t do anything more. So frustrating.
Anyway, the title of this entry was inspired by something I saw today. And a few days ago. And last week. And the week before last. Several times now I have seen a guy in a Burger King uniform walking along various parts of a long stretch of road to go to his job. Today I saw him as far back as four miles from the particular BK that I know he works at. And that made me sad for that guy, and whatever circumstances he’s in that he has to walk eight miles a day to work a crappy job serving crappy food to crappy customers, making crap for pay. If he’s lucky, he’s making $7 an hour. But knowing the store, and the corp. that owns that particular BK and many others in the area, I doubt he’s making much over $6.50. Unless he was lucky enough to be hired after PA’s minimum wage went up.
The kids are better. Finally. No sickness of any kind since Monday morning. They had a bit of milk today, the first since early last week. And real meals! It’s weird to be cooking again, after so many days of serving up bland bits of oatmeal, toast, applesauce and rice.
Tonight I’m taking Alyssa and Ryan shopping to pick out their presents for Dan’s birthday. It should be interesting to see what Alyssa chooses to give her Daddy for his 26th birthday.
P.S. My pens keep disappearing. Grr!

I walked several blocks to the McDonald’s I worked out for a while until I got a job at the hospital doing data entry. I still have to go down a few streets to get there. Life sucks when you’re young, inexperienced with jobs, and carless.
Aww can’t wait to see what Dan gets for his birthday ;)
Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that if someone is in assisted living or a nursing home, and a 3rd party is managing their money, nothing will be paid except the assisted living or nursing home bill. The one who was handling my mom’s finances had the audacity to have my mom’s cardiologist send ME the $60,000 bill for my mom’s stent implant, instead of making the payment arrangements for it and using my mom’s money to pay for it. Grrrr! :grumpy:
That poor guy! I know how he feels, I don’t have a car, and I’m lucky that I have someone who is willing to take me back and forth to work!
Awww! I wonder what Alyssa will choose.
That’s so bad about your grandfather. I hope things get worked out for him soon.
Poor guy! I know it’s healthy to walk, but that’s still sad to see. Especially if he’s barely making enough money to live.
Aww, I hope they had fun choosing presents!
I hope things with your granpa work out. I love your new layout. I can’t wait to see what Dan gets for his birthday.
I hope things work out with your grandpa.
Unfortunately there are a lot of bad assisted living homes out there. When my mom owned hers she had a waiting list of people. We got some pretty bad cases of bed sores and dehydration, all sorts of things when we got people from other homes. We even got a lady who had one of the workers at her previous home stealing from her right under her nose.
People think they can just take advantage of the elderly because they’re old and senile, it isn’t right.
Anyways… Adorable layout! It’s clean and cheery!
Wow… walking that far? Crazy! Although… to be honest I do know of a few people who walk that far just for the sake of exercise and would prefer to walk than take a car or bus, so perhaps they are doing so for similar reasons? *shrugs* hard to tell one’s circumstances without knowing a person. I could not work in fast food. I would eat it all lol. But then some people ask how I can work selling shoes because they hate feet. It is all relevant.
