Dear Walmart,
So, you’re giving yourself a makeover. And that’s nice. It really is. While it’s like giving a lump of poop a fresh coat of paint, I give you props for at least making an effort. Your walls are bright green, yellow and blue. The checkout registers are arranged so that lines to the front row of them are easier to form and manage, and you actually have more than two open at a time. Better still, employees are actually speaking to me, smiling at me, HELPING me. The fact that they’re available, out on the floor and not waist deep in boxes is a miracle in and of itself.
But I thought I should bring one teensy, tiny thing to your attention. Hopefully while you’re slapping up that paint, turning the store on its head in order to put every part of the store somewhere else, and coaxing your employees out of their shelves and onto the floor, you take care of this glaring error that has been in place for at least ten years (basically, since I moved to this area!):
Sincerely,
A customer who would never, ever shop at your store if Target were open 24/7
P.S. Waiting seven minutes for a greeter to look over my return, scan it, enter a code into a handheld device, print out a special bar code and then send me off to the continually growing customer service lane where they then DID THE SAME EXACT THING was annoying. You should have just given the greeter a cash register and saved me the time waiting in line.
P.P.S. Tell the cashier at register #5 that while it is perfectly acceptable to leave the register to tell people waiting in other lines that he is open, it is NOT acceptable to then come back to the register and tell the person standing there (that would be me) that I had to take my three items and wait until he checked out TWO SHOPPING CARTS worth of stuff from the two women that followed him from another line.

UGH! They’re turning one of our Wal-Marts upside down to “fix it up” and it’s a total mess. They don’t have anything where it belongs and they also don’t have any idea of where they put stuff!
What that cashier did was wrong. You were waiting in line already at his register and should have been served first. But Hobby Lobby did that to me – they had one register open, opened a second one, but when I moved over to the newly opened one, they told me that they couldn’t help me because I “wasn’t next.” The person who was next had opted to stick it out at the original register, but the person at the 2nd register would not help anyone until that person at register 1 had been helped.
LOL! Ten years and they haven’t fixed the TOSTER sign, yet??? Oh boy, that’s pure laziness. The new Walmart that we went to in Southern, IL got on my nerves because the greeter would talk TOO much. Generally, it’s “Welcome to Walmart”. Nooo he has to wave and speak low then recite “Welcome to Walmart, I’m so and so, blah blah blah, insert words that go unheard because I’m not talking loud enough”! We don’t have to worry about that anymore since we’ve moved, HOWEVER yesterday we were going to go grocery shopping at another Walmart but the power was out! UGH. Maybe today…
Customer service has gotten really poorly, these days no matter where you go. You can get okay service or very crappy (were you don’t wanna shop/eat here again).
Cashiers need to learn how to cut cash without the help of the register and people who are in sales need to be on the floor but not hiding in the break room or in another dept. I saw that all the time when I worked at home depot (grr)
You’d think someone would have changed that sign error by now, Or does anyone know how to spell anymore? Maybe email/call the companies hq to vent?
LOL at tosters! That is what can only be described as “LONG TERM FAIL”. LMFAO! o.O
I thought people weren’t allowed to take pictures in Shopping Centres or use video cameras etc? It’s illegal to do so here!
But what idiots. How could they not notice the big stuff up? After all that time lol. I’d be embarrassed if I were the person who spelled it like that and didn’t take notice! Ahh well its too late now haha!
I hope you didn’t move and let him check out the other people first? Why did he do that anyway? Were they friends or something?
I would have stood there, looked at him and said “..Uh..no? Are you kidding me? Check out my three items first, and then you can take care of them. Kthx.”
I don’t ever have problems at any walmarts around here. Well, sometimes there is no one to be found but.. Rarely stupid people..
Oh wait, I take that back.
I suppose your walmart is our asda? I hate asda. they change everything round every week so you go to an isle thinking your going to get some cat food and find bleach in its place. I cannot believe that they have had a speling mistake up for almost 10 years…actually, I kinda can. xxx
I was actually in Walmart recently really late with my boyfriend and a guy asked if we needed help, both of us were shocked lol. I never understood how Walmart could not be helpful, I’m not just saying that because I work at Target (okay well I am sorta), I just don’t see how employees can see dozens of guests walk by them confused and looking lost and not help them. Hell, I even help people if I am on break (that happened last night, a girl was about to ask me where something was than she realized I was on my break but I told her I didn’t mind). I also hate the Walmart shoppers that come to Target and complain and say Walmart is cheaper, 99.9 percent of the time they come back and complain about how Walmart was barely .5 cents cheaper and how they couldn’t find anyone to help them anyways
I’ve always wanted a “toster”.
My main thing with Walmart is just the checkout lanes, it’s ridiculous sometimes how long someone has to wait in line. Although, I think I have noticed they do what we do at Target and sometimes call for back up cashiers (I work the salefloor but if the front lanes is super busy they’ll call for people off of the floor to come and check people out). That is rather rude of that guy to not check you out first, I could understand if you have a buggy full of stuff but 3 items? Really now.

I really don’t have too many issues at walmart, thankfully. I do end up going there like 3 times a week though. It’s sad. We just got a target like across the street from it 2 weeks ago and I have no desire to shop at it. Too expensive.

I work at a wal-mart and we have the same problems at our store. Managment trys to point the finger at the sales associates… but after reading this post and the comments it makes me think the problem comes from higher up. I think I will print this out and take it to the managers.
I did a paper about why Wal-Mart and other big-box companies are “bad” last year for an argumentation class. But yeah, I never go into Wal-Mart unless I am forced too. I always go to Target :). I laughed out loud (lol) at toster. Is it really illegal to take pictures in Wal-Mart and other stores? Because I’ve definitely done that before.

As a former Walmart employee, I sure have my fair share of hate for the company but I really don’t think it gets all the crap it deserves. I know first hand that, at least at my store, making customer contact was big and we all tried to do so as much as possible. I tried not to freak anyone out because I know that few people want to be pounced on as soon as they enter the store but Walmart has a 10 foot rule where employees are supposed to great any customer within 10 feet. I think location has a lot to do with it, of course. But I think that, unfortunately, product demand is a higher priority than customer support. Still,”tosters” is funny.

LOL! That’s funny!
We have a Walmart here by our military base and it’s the only decent one around here. Maybe it’s because it’s new…
One thing I have noticed when I go to Walmart is that I get shocked whenever I touch metal in there. NO JOKE! Seriously. It happens everytime. Also, they have bird nests up there. I hear birdies up in there all the time! hahaha

A ‘toster’, eh? I’ve always wanted one of those! I’ve never been a big fan of Walmart except for how they price things like dvds and cds since it’s usually cheaper than other stores so I get those things there, but that’s about it.
After reading your post, I want to hug you! However, since..1) I don’t know you 2) I could do nothing more than an e-hug.. I shal refrain and be satisfied with a smile directed at your blog.
My most favorite walmart in the area just finished renovations. They painted it a diahrea tan/brown and gunked up the entire store. I hate it. I wish nothing more to shop there. If we had a Kmart/Target close enough..I’d go there.
Now, I’m interested in this “Toster.” If I were in your area, I would totally point it out to a worker and ask to see one.
I too worked at walmart in the optical center. We used to make fun of the regular workers because you could place bets on how long it would take them to run and hide or where they would hide daily just to avoid customer contact. It’s really quite entertaining. I can’t even tell you how many times they would come hang out with us or go outside with us and then a manager would come looking for them. The problem is….Walmart takes what Walmart can get.
Still, tosters is just unacceptable.
Misspelled signs alwys makes me laugh. I mean, it’s labeling yourself dumb and no one didn’t even have to make an effort to prove it. And even though we don’t have either Walmart or Target her in Sweden, I recognize some of those behaiviours you talk about. But the line one, I mean, we swedes are experts at standing in line. If that would happen here, the guy sitting behind the cash register would be lynched.

They’re renovating our Walmart, too. Oh my goodness, I can’t believe that’s not been changed. Wow.
I so want to go out and buy a TOSTER now!!! Thats awesome.

The P.P.S. would make me so fucking mad. Did he end up ringing them first or you?

OMG. Wow. I have made typos (as you know Jenn heh ;) But seriously, WALMART. Come on.
I don’t always have the best grammar, but you’d think a corporation with as much money as Walmart has would be able to afford freaking spell check for their signs! Haha, that’s so sad. I like Target a lot better anyway.
LMAO2! not to be off topic, but WALMART isn’t the only place that has done one in like that TOSTER. . this one is worse, IMO, here in Tacoma,WA, a SUBWAY on HOSMER/86th(?), had there PUBLIC Sign: [..blahblah..$5]“.. BREAKFEST ..”..
Go figure. . (i actually *really* like subway, but c’mon. . ‘sound-it-out’ comes to mind. . LOL, I guess whomever posted on that sign was REALLY way to “hooked on phonics!” (rememeber, the 80′s? oh crap.. nevermind.. i ain’t THAT old, yet;)
Anyways, It was there for a few months, untill they got the $5 for any footlong ..
Welps, didn’t mean to change subjects, but this is REALLY unaxeptible!
Cheers, and good night from tacoma, wa

I dunno. I still don’t think he did anything wrong by telling those other people to come to his register. After all, his line was empty, and they were waiting in line in the other aisle. How many times have you been waiting a long time in line, and someone opens up a register and takes a bunch of other new people before you get a chance?
At that point, I fault the shoppers who he brought over for not being nice enough to let you go ahead.
I have so much experience and first-hand knowledge of Wal-mart this point, it’s disgusting. And yet I still want to shop there.
Not that I work there or anything. *cough*.

That has happened, and I’ve never thought it should have been any other way. It’s first come, first serve. A lit light indicates an open register. If another customer gets there before I do — even if the cashier came over to tell me her line was open/free — then they go before me. They were there first, and that’s that.
This reminds me so much of working in TK Maxx, it seemed that every single associate on the floor would totally ignore any customers who’d come near them, meaning the customers would come to complain to me in customer services. Not fun, having the same conversation with 30+ customers a day because the people on the floor couldn’t put stock out AND have a conversation at the same time.
The spelling mistake is great though – there’s a Costcutter next to my house that I worked in 6 years ago that still has the Christmas decorations that we put up when I worked there on the ceilings. It cracks me up every time I’m in there, especially in the middle of summer. How long would it take to climb a set of ladders and take them down… 5 minutes?
went to walmart last night. they are doing the same revamping there. WTF? Did they get some kind of white trash spruce up grant? I know, I shop there all the time because it’s all we have, but you have to admit it’s white trash heaven.
The spelling thing is funny. They must be Polish (as dictionary.com says that is the polish spelling of Toaster) …. I would bring the spelling error to the attention of management just to see what they say, they too could have spelling issues, or just for fun ask them how many people have complained or mentioned the spelling error. That I would like to know.
I’m sure it isn’t Walmart fault, just the owner of that franchise store lol. It IS pretty dumb. XD Did you send that in to them? Anonymously? At all? That would’ve been hilarious lol.
They just finished redoing our walmart and I actually like it. It was never really a bad store to begin with. I think the walmart experience depends on the store your stuck shopping at!
Anyway I’m not surprised about the spelling error thing. I worked at the store near me for a year and pointed out something similar once. They just now fixed it and I worked there 5 years ago.
