They’re still alive!

When Jason first brought us a hermit crab from the beach, I worried about how long it would live. Well, that was over a month ago, and the original Cindy is doing fantastic. We got her some friends about three weeks back, and Hello Kitty Cindy (now Rainbow Cindy) and Rainbow Cindy (now Butterfly Cindy) are doing just fine.

I’m the type of person that killed goldfish. And lizards. And tree frogs. So to have hermit crabs live for over a month, well, I’m impressed. And relieved.

Hermit crabs are boring, but yet they’re neat. They don’t fly back into their shells the minute our shadows fall across their path, but being in the kitchen they’re exposed to a lot of noise and traffic, so they’ve gotten used to it. We have a bunch of extra shells in the tank, and it’s amusing to see them swap around and play musical shells with one another.

The neatest thing? Hermit crabs make little noises, probably by rubbing their legs together the same way crickets do. The sound is like a cross between a cricket and a mouse squeak. The first time I heard it I thought there was a mouse in the house.

We’ve got a freakin’ zoo here… a dog, three cats and three hermit crabs. Oy!

That’s pretty cool. :D I love their shells, did you buy them or hand-paint them? Do you have a photo of the tank set up? I’m curious how hermit crabs live in a domestic setting.

Mine only lasted a month or two. =/

Squeeking is a sound I’ve never heard them make. I swear that mine would try to commit suicide by climbing on the rocks and hurling themselves off – as if they were bungee jumping. You’d hear their shell smack against the side of the tank, and sometimes I’d have to pick it up just to check if they were alright. lol.

Haha, I love their shells. My sister had a hermit crab – I don’t know what the hell happened to it. The last time I was at my dad’s I asked about it and my step-mom said it died awhile back.

  4. Hehe we had hermit crabs in the third grade in our classroom. They were definitely pretty interesting. I took it home after we did our experiments or observations or whatever we did and it died a couple weeks later. Ah well. Glad yours are still going strong! Cute shells, by the way. I never saw anyone have cool hermit crab shells like that before.
