A Leah update

I have now had Leah for two weeks. In that time we have had one accident, and that was because I didn’t get out to the kitchen to take her outside fast enough. Other than that, she goes outside every few hours, and at night she’s crated. I do admit that there are a few nights when she isn’t crated, and so for those nights I put down a puppy pad for her to use. She has used it only once or twice, so she obviously prefers waiting to go out.

The first two nights were quiet, but for a few nights after that she would bark after we went to bed. Dan wanted me to go out to her to quiet her down, but as any dog owner will tell you, giving into that behavior and essentially giving her what she wants can cause a power struggle/imbalance. And there IS no power struggle. I am alpha, and that’s that.

I still don’t trust her unsupervised in carpeted areas of the house, but she’s in them every day, multiple times a day, with myself, Daniel and the kids.

I guess the next thing to work on is her being on a leash. I have taken her out several times, but she’s still somewhat shy, and doesn’t always want to follow when I’m walking.

The thing she loves and does best and most often is cuddle. She likes to be with me when I’m on the couch or in the living room recliner, and at my feet when I’m at my computer desk. As I type this, she is nestled between my left calf and thigh (I have my left leg up on the couch next to me body, like an upside down V), with her head tucked into my side.

She snores. LOUDLY. It’s too cute.

She listens well. Just saying her name in a firm tone of voice stops her from whatever she shouldn’t be doing. She comes when I call her, though she dances around a lot in excitement, so picking her up or putting a leash or the electronic collar on her can be a bit of a pain.

I received her rabies vaccination paperwork, certificate and tag from the breeder a few days ago, so now I need to shop around to find a vet who has spayed pugs, and get her done ASAP. I also need to shop around for a heavier towel or blanket to drape over her crate in the winter. I won’t pamper her with heated mattress pads like some dog owners do, but I will protect her crate from drafts that come in under the back door. :)

  1. Aww, I’m glad things are going well with Leah. She’s such a cutie. Tiny dogs snoring really is freaking adorable!

Aww, look at her cute face- sooo pretty. How awesome that she is doing so well!! I’ve heard that some people leave the leash on and let the dogs run around with it on to get them used to it… I never had a problem with the leash (I think he was a little weary of it at first but pretty much got over it fast) so I never used this technique.

  3. Aww! I’ve been reading about her on twitter for what seems like forever. She’s incredibly sweet.
