My darling, beautiful Alyssa is now four years old. She hasn’t quite grasped that yet, because as far as she is concerned, since she hasn’t had a birthday party or presents or cards, it isn’t yet her birthday. We’re doing her party on Saturday at 1pm. We had planned for this past Sunday (the 26th) at 3pm, but nobody was able to come. We told several people verbally over a month in advance, and sent out the invitations three and a half weeks in advance, but everyone was busy with work and other plans. So, this Saturday at 1pm it is. This is weird… until now there’s never been a birthday of Alyssa’s or Ryan’s (of course, he’s only had two, lol) that we haven’t acknowledged and celebrated on the day itself. I feel bad that we didn’t do anything today for her, although we did tell her Happy Birthday and that she’s four years old and such a big girl. Of course, she was much more interested in the Trick-or-Treat we took her and Ryan to tonight.
I don’t think I have quite grasped that she is four. I was looking at a photo from her when she was three years old, and the changes that she has gone through this past year are astounding. The baby roundness of her face, the chubby arms, the dimples at her elbows and knees, the endearing toddler babble… they’re all gone. In their place is this long, lean, lanky small child with a shrill but clear voice. The little bit of baby that is still in her shows only in her round belly and butt.
I know every mother says it, but my daughter is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I will also say that she wasn’t the cutest or prettiest baby (I honestly thought Ryan was cuter as a baby 
), but she has definitely gotten prettier as she has gotten older.
I can’t wait until Saturday. Almost everyone will be able to come, and Alyssa will really be able to grasp and celebrate being four years old.
