For as long as I can remember I have always spelled the shortened form of my first name (Jennifer, duh) with two N’s. That’s Jenn, not Jen. Two N’s.

My mother refuses to accept that. For as long as I have been spelling my name as Jenn, my mom has been spelling my name as Jen. I called her out on it several weeks ago, and she rudely informed me that it’s up to her how my name is spelled, since she gave me the name, and it doesn’t make sense to have two N’s.

…really? That’s funny, because I can think of several names where the shortened form always takes on both of the same letters. Examples:

Since when do you see Bil, Wil, Jes, and Mat? For that matter, how often do you see Jen? Not very often…

And even if Jen is a somewhat typical shortened form of Jennifer, there’s no reason why my mother can’t respect my desire to carry both N’s. I’m not changing my name or rearranging the letters. I’m simply keeping two N’s on Jenn. What’s the big deal? Why does she insist on having such blatant disregard for what I want?

I think from now on I’m going to ignore any IMs or emails from her that start out with Jen… because Jen is NOT how my name is spelled dammit.

My mom detested my nickname of Char that my friends gave me. She always called me Cheri, which isn’t even how my name is spelled in the first place! I think it’s just a Mom thing that they decide how they want to spell it and that’s it. LOL

“Oh, you sent me how many emails? … 10!? Goodness, I don’t know why I haven’t received them! You know what else is strange? I keep getting all of these strange emails addressed to someone named “Jen”….”

I feel the same way, when people misspell my name. It’s Brandy, not Brandi, Brandie, and so on. Of course, I know the feeling of frustration, having your name spelled wrong.

If she uses that line again, maybe suggest to her that if she only wanted it to be shortened to one n, then maybe she should have spelt your name with one(i.e Jenifer) at birth.

I had a boss that spelled my name wrong on purpose just to be witchy about it when I called her out on it. No matter how many times I corrected her, everything addressed to me in that office was addressed to ‘Erica’. -_-;; Very frustrating.

  6. oh I so understand what you are all saying. everyone spells my name ‘nicole’ and my maiden name of stacy was always spelled ‘stacey’ I really hate when you’ve known someone for a long period of time and they can’t be bothered to spell your name right!

  7. Eh my mom does this. Not so much because she is oblivious to the fact that I don’t like my nickname, but because she’s oblivious to the fact that it confuses people.

It’s not my fault that I was nicknamed Rae when I was a child. My mother however, went so far as to tell the school to call me that, they actually had it on official records as my middle name. That’s so not the case. It’s Ranee thank you, Rae is a nickname. My mother will still to this day talk to people about me and call me Rae. She does it to like official people like hospitals and doctors and crap and then acts like she doesn’t understand why they have no clue who I am.

Half the time she never even clarifies that it’s Rae and not Ray so they are looking for a male. It’s a weirdo mom thing.

Yeah, sorry to say but “Jenn” is the odd man out. I spell mine Jen (my name is Jennifer. Yes, two N’s, but I refuse to use both when shortening my name), and I have seen it spelled “Jen” more than “Jenn.”

However, all of my teachers in high school and college have referred to me as Jen, with 1 N, and I always correct them. But it seems they don’t listen.

Also, my mother spelled my middle name as Lynne instead of Lynn. And I still have people try to spell it without the E, and that annoys the hell out of me.

So, I agree with you. It is your choice the way you want to spell your name; however, people will also spell it the way they want regardless of how many times you tell me “NO! It’s spelled….” LOL.

Opps…I meant to say all of my teachers of spelled my name as Jenn — with 2 N’s, instead of Jen, with 1 N..

  10. I know that same feeling, my full name is kimberly yet everywhere I go they always spell it with an extra E “ley” even when they have the paper work infront of them. ugh… I’ve been going by kimm since grade school, and yet people think its short for kimmie.

Then again, I don’t mind my friends/work calling me kimm/kimberly cause I’ll answer to both (some days) but when a family member shortens my name I barely reply.

I have seen ‘Will’ spelled with only one ‘L’ but it just didn’t look right to me. I dated a guy in high school named Scot..I always thought it was odd that his name only had 1 ‘T’ lol..
