Have a very bokeh Christmas

So, I am the proud owner of a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D. Am I dork for loving the fact that I can do heart bokehs with this particular lens? Probably, so let the dorkiness ensue!

I need to quit shooting in straight portrait mode and work more on the manual and program settings. Though I suppose that the portrait mode is a good way to go when you’re following around a four year old and two year old who couldn’t sit still for more than 0.2 seconds, even if their lives depended on it. Even when Ryan does sit still to watch cartoons or zone out, his toes are wiggling.

Here are a few more pictures I took today with the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D. It’s pretty cool that I must focus manually; it forces me to stop being so lazy all the time and relying on the auto-focus! Although I do admit there are times when I switch off the auto-focus, because it’s not focusing where I want it to, so I say screw it and take matters into my own hands.

Blah. It has done nothing but RAIN for the past 24 hours. I could really go with some clear skies right about now. Or even cloudy skies. Just hold the H2O, pretty please. I hate rain so much that I sent Dan out for milk today, even though he detests going out most of the time. Oh well. I do 99% of the errands around here, so it was more than his turn. :P

Right now I’m enjoying some cream of wheat. Good stuff. I seriously don’t think I’ve had any since Ryan was an infant. I used to make some for Alyssa and I every morning. I have not-so-fond memories of the milk boiling over and making a mess all over the stove because I got held up nursing Ryan in the living room. I learned to watch the clock after a few repeat incidents, and/or stick Ryan in the sling and feed him that way!

Speaking of nursing and such, my period is due today. I’m just sitting here twiddling my thumbs, waiting for a sign. C’mon Mother Nature, don’t fail me now! (Psst… you guys really come out of the woodwork for some good ‘ol fashioned Is Jenn Pregnant!? drama! Where are all you guys for the rest of my posts?!)

I’m happy. Some unexpected work + Dan’s Christmas bonus = enough money for bills AND the rest of the Christmas presents we’d like to buy! I got my mom’s Christmas present and a present for Jason the other night, but we still need to get a few more things for Alyssa and Ryan, something for my ten year old brother, and gifts for Dan’s sisters and youngest brothers, and his three aunts and one uncle. We’re hoping to go shopping this Saturday, or maybe this Sunday. Nah, probably Saturday, because I think my mom and I are going to see my ten year old brother on Sunday. (No, no news on my brothers. The hearing has been rescheduled for December 29th, which is my youngest brother’s eleventh birthday. It’s up in the air if we can take him out for his birthday, or have either of the boys home for Christmas. :( )

I’m also happy because as of this moment I HAVE NO WORK TO DO. Not a thing. This doesn’t happen very often. I’m so used to budgeting my time very carefully, so that when I have ALL THIS FREE TIME I get kind of… lost. Lame, right?

I checked out the link to see what a bokeh is and is the coolest thing ever. It looks so nifty. Your photos are beautiful, as always. I hope your brothers get to go home for Christmas… -crosses fingers-

  2. Drama? There was drama and I missed it? Damn, going to comb the last post, etc.

First of all, that new lens of yours? OM NOM!

Second, I’ve gotten so bad about commenting. I read on a regular basis but I usually have my hands full with an Elijah, or I’m trying to keep my eyes open because #2 is wearing me out! I will try to be a better commenter, though :D

P.S. I’ve been meaning to tell you for a while that I don’t own ThatGirl.nu anymore. My new site, SoSheSays, net, should be active by tomorrow and fully up by this weekend. I mainly wanted to let you know because the link you have is not pointing to nothing :cute:

    • Hey Leesha,
I’m a lurker at times too. I’m very bad about just reading and leaving without commenting. It’s something I’m working on though. So hey, I know where you’re coming from!
Also, I’ll make sure to get your link updated. :)

    i’m an embarrassment to all dslr owners, i basically just stick mine on auto and use it as a glorified point and shoot. but in my defense, i do know how to use a ‘real’ camera since i used to do darkroom photography with my old slr camera. i’m just lazy ^_^;;

it’s been raining all day here too, which is really odd because technically it’s summer! we hardly ever get rainy/humid weather like this, but it’s nice.

i hope you get to enjoy your time off!

I’m shocked your lens came so fast! I can’t wait until we save enough money so I can get the canon version as well as the flash. The photos yours seems to take are wonderful.

I’m almost always a lurker. I try not to be but I’m shy by nature so it’s not so surprising that I run off before commenting.

I get lost in free time, too. We’re in the same boat there tonight.

  9. Aw! Congrats! The picture is awesome, as always. I like the Christmas theme, too

I confess – I’m a lurker but not by choice. Since my evenings are so jam-packed, I tend to visit during working hours. This requires me to be very covert in my reading (so my nosy cube mates don’t see) and I keep my non – work related sites minimized for most of the day. Commenting requires me to maximize my screen and greatly increases my chances of getting busted for slacking off.

Wow, that lens is kick ass. :) I love that photo with the hearts.

My husband and I still have not done ANY Christmas shopping. We’re so bad at it. Due to some bills due this week, we probably won’t even get anything until NEXT Friday! Crazy.

Embrace the dorkiness! Celebrate the Geek within!
That is such a cool effect-I must give it a go!
I got my 18-55mm lens as part of a kit -I have a 70-300mm which is seriousy good fun!
I have never heard of a bokeh though!I must give that a try-I’ve literally just bought myself a flashgun for my Nikon -my bad.
Yes I lurk a lot-I have the tendency to be terrible anti-social

That Nikon lens is beautiful! I have the same one and I love taking pictures with it. I’m with you on the manual/auto-focus dilemma too. I have a 60mm 2.8 micro lens, it’s great, and I love the auto-focus but the fact that it can’t focus on what I want it to sometimes makes me insane! There are ways around that though, or at least on the D40 I can adjust what the point-of-focus is.

In any case, you take BEAUTIFUL pictures! Let me know if you’d like a quick run-down on the basics of shooting in manual. I’ve taken two photography classes now, so I like to think I have that idea down pat!
