The downside of having a .nu

Imagine my surprise when I went to add a comment I made at Angela’s blog to my Commented On list, and I got some funky GoDaddy landing page. I figured something whacked and I just had to reset the nameservers, no great shakes. Until I logged into my domain manager area at GoDaddy and saw that jenn.nu WASN’T IN MY LIST OF DOMAINS.

Cue major freak-out and a phone call to GoDaddy while I tried not to hyperventilate. The rep told me she had no clue where jenn.nu went or why it even disappeared, since the renewal date wasn’t until January 1st, 2009. Granted, they had sent me a few renewal notice emails, but typically the world doesn’t end and you don’t lose a domain name because you choose to wait until the last damn minute to renew (I’m good at that).

Unless you have a .nu domain name, and you have it registered with any other registrar besides eNom and Nu Names. Turns out, just about every other freaking registrar on the planet requires you to renew your .nu domain on the 20th of the month prior to the renewal month. So because jenn.nu is up for renewal in January, it has to be renewed by December 20th. (I need to keep this in mind for xoxo.nu, which is also with GoDaddy. It expires on February 7th, so I have to get it renewed by January 20th.)

The GoDaddy rep had no idea about this little “rule”. In fact, I was on hold for almost forty-five minutes while she ran around (figuratively or literally, I’m not sure which) finding reps and senior reps and tech support and anyone else she could think of to figure out an answer as to where the hell jenn.nu went and why, and how to get it back.

So, crisis over. As of 2pm today, jenn.nu was “reinstated” and put back in my account (I changed the nameservers back as well; I’m not sure why it took almost ten hours for the change to take effect!). I had to renew it right then and there, and something on their end whacked out and I could only do it for one year. Mind you, .nu domains require a two year minimum, so I’ve made a note to pay for the standard two year renewal this week, so the one year glitch doesn’t go and FUBAR things again.

You know what’s weird though? Okay, I can sort of accept the idea of a .nu domain having to be renewed on the 20th of the month before its renewal month. But as of VERY EARLY THIS MORNING (sometime after 3am) jenn.nu was yanked down and showing the default registrar nameservers. Last time I checked, the 20th covered my ass until 11:59pm EST.
And something else I just thought of: if I have to make sure to renew the domain on the 20th of December, I’m essentially paying for a two year registration but only getting one year, eleven months and two and a half weeks. Kinda shitty, don’t you think?

Moral of the story? If your .nu domain name is with GoDaddy, NameCheap, NamePros or just about any registrar besides eNom or Nu Names, it will need to be renewed on the 20th of the month prior to the month the name is up for renewal.

And I am suddenly so glad I never got a .nu name. Bleh! That stinks. I’m telling you though, GoDaddy’s customer service and reliability has gone way down the tubes lately. :(

  2. Me too. I was contemplating Ranee.nu but I don’t like the sound of it and as you can see from Justranee.com being yanked I have a hard time keeping things paid on time. But I’m glad you’re back!!!! Sounds like a whole bunch of crap, 45 minutes on hold? Talk about a waste of your time!

Both of mine are through enom, that is just an odd rule. Especially when the people that work for them don’t know it either :P At least it’s back and working again.

  4. I don’t own a domain, but my gosh, what a lengthy, convoluted process the renewal sounds like! I think if I ever did buy a domain, I might stay away from .nu!?

  6. I was wondering what happened, but thanks to Twitter, i knew you were having problems. My domain name is set to expire on the 31st of this month, so I have to renew soon. Though like you, I wait until the last minute. pfft. :P Last year I forgot all about it and I got one of those weird pages too so I had to quickly renew to get my site back up. Although with Surpass, I don’t have to renew until the day that it’s set to expire.

  9. Wow, that sounds really crazy! I would have never known that. Nobody tells us these things. I’m glad that I found out about this through you or I probably would’ve run into the same problem.
