Walking is good for everyone, and as an added bonus, for the time being it’s also good for breast cancer awareness and research! BeeWell Miles is a special campaign being run by the people behind Bumble Bee Tuna. Basically, for every mile logged on the beewellmiles.com website, Bumble Bee Foods will donate $0.15 to the Breast Cancer Network of Strength campaign. Up to $200,000 will be donated, and all you have to do to contribute is log how many miles you walked or ran in a single day on their website!
I’ve taken up walking as a healthy approach to losing weight (in conjunction with trying to eat better foods, reducing portions and guzzling plenty of water!). Of course, walking alone can be somewhat boring, so to give myself more of a purpose for being out and about (besides wanting to be healthier), I’ve been bringing Leah along with me. She loves to go, and as soon as she sees me grab my hoodie and pick up her leash, she goes into massive spinning dog mode, where she literally spins in tight little circles until she’s huffing from exertion.
So when I went out last Friday, I not only took along Leah and my other walking essentials (bottle of water, cell phone, iPod), but I also took along a pedometer (thanks Bumble Bee Foods!). On Friday, just from the walk alone, I logged 2100 steps (according to the beewellmiles.com website, it takes roughly 2000 steps to equal one mile). Today I did 2429 steps in about 35 minutes (the time probably would have been shorter, but we kept stopping so that kids could pet Leah). According to the pedometer my distance was 0.76 miles. I’m not sure what gives there, but hey, either way, for a focused walk, I’d say that 2429 steps is pretty decent!
Here we are, myself and Miss Leah, my excited, eager walking partner (who was huffing, puffing and lagging a bit by the end of our walk today):
My goal is to get out and do a focused walk like this three times a week. Between Dan’s work schedule, Alyssa’s preschool, Ryan’s therapists, my work and the various other obligations I have, there may be days where it’s going to be a struggle to get the time in, but I’m determined. Wish me luck!

Oh good luck hun! I know you can do it If you set your mind to it! I LOVE getting outside and exploring nature and just walking in general! Nature really uplifts me!
Good luck with the walking. I really want to get back into doing that as well. The last time I tried that out I ended up hurting my ankle because I tried to jog before I was in shape again. I’m more of a jogger than a walker but I need to get back into shape first. I hope you do well with your goals. It seems like you are pretty determined. Keep it up!
