Staying safe at home

Dan works a decent amount of second shift, so there are many nights when I am home alone. It’s not something I really dwell on, because if I dwell on it and consciously think about it, then I’ll start jumping at every noise and basically turn myself into a paranoid wreck until he gets home from work. Instead, I try to be proactive, and I stay busy with the kids, housework, my work, and doing my own thing when there’s some time left over to do so.

So, what do I do to be safe? Well, I always keep lights on. Even if I just want to read a book in the bedroom or watch TV, I make sure the living room lights are on. I also keep the outside lights on. The blinds are kept closed, except for a three inch gap in the kitchen window so the cats can enjoy some fresh air. People can’t see in, so they can’t see what I’m up to, that I’m home alone, what kind of goodies we have in here, and so on and so forth. I also have Leah, of course, and she’s good about standing at attention and barking if she hears noises outside. And the obvious thing — keeping the doors locked. We have keyed deadbolts on both our front and back doors, and they’re locked at all times (keeps the kids in and the creeps out!).

I think that I would like to get a wireless security system one of these days. Or even a wired one. Just something a little more technologically advanced than outside lights and a 20 lb. dog. ;) I’m looking over GE Home Security at protectamerica.com, and they have several different packages to choose from. I could definitely go for the bronze or silver packages, which include 7+ entry points (doors and windows!) and even a motion detector (I’d like this for the back door). There is also the internal siren and door chime, a battery backup to fall back on, and a yard sign and window decals to warn potential burglars away with.

If you’re interested in any of these packages, you can call 877-470-2751 to find out more or to place an order. Also, if you call that specific number, you’ll get two free keychain remotes with your order. :)
