Breast milk is the ideal nutrition for babies, and while I wouldn’t go so far as to label myself a hardcore activist (or lactivist), I am very pro-breastfeeding, and I strongly feel that all mothers should try their best to breastfeed. However, I do understand that there are some mothers that simply can’t, due to physical problems, emotional issues (such as past sexual abuse), work or school schedules, or because of medications that would be dangerous for the baby to ingest. In that case, formula is most definitely the way to go. Formula may be used exclusively, or it can be used for mothers who need to supplement, due to breast milk supply issues or conflicting work or school schedules.
However, not all formulas are the same. Yes, there are standards that must be met as defined by the FDA, but even then some formula companies simply produce higher quality formulas than other companies. There are many different formula companies out there. One I have never heard of until tonight is Comforts for Baby. I haven’t heard of this particular brand, though I understand it to be a generic-name that is carried by many grocery stores, including Kroger, Fred Meyer, Baker’s and Owen’s.
As required by the FDA, Comforts Baby formula is fortified with the basics: iron, vitamins, nutrients and minerals. Lipids DHA and ARA, which are essential for a baby’s visual and mental development, are also present in the formula, along with lactose and other nutrients that are naturally found in a woman’s breast milk.
Right now Comforts is holding a contest where interested individuals can submit their favorite names (I’d probably name the cute little thing Bugsley!) for the little mascot firefly. The person whose name is ultimately chosen for the firefly mascot will win a $10,000 scholarship! You can enter at comfortsforbaby.com, and you have until July 31st to enter!
