Four hours shy of enough

Did I mentioned that I registered a domain name for my photography? No? Well, I did. I know that what I do certainly isn’t professional quality, but I still wanted a separate blog to showcase the photography I am proud of. Anyway, I have been thinking about names since May, finally registered one in June, and just now got around to coming up with a layout for it. I’m using WordPress on it, of course, so I needed something that was also blog entry friendly.

Silly me got rather involved with the task of creating a theme and didn’t fall asleep until after 4:00am. Stupid of me, really, since we had to be up by 9:00am in order to attend the funeral of one of Dan’s uncles, who passed away on July 26th (yes, Ryan’s birthday). Actually, I had to be up by 9:00am, so I had time to shower, go pick up my mom and bring her back to stay with Ryan (we took Alyssa with us because Dan’s sisters really wanted to take her for a sleepover). Dan had until 10:00am to sleep. He really needed the extra hour, because some stuff going on at work had him there until almost 5 in the morning. Damn second-turned-third shift schedules. :(
So off we went, running on four or so hours of sleep apiece.

The funeral went well, if you can say that a funeral goes well. It was hot as balls outside, and we all stood around in black clothes in the stifling, moist heat while the father (nothing like a Catholic funeral service to bring back memories of going to Catholic church as a child!) performed a very nice service.

After the funeral, Dan and I went to his aunt’s house, where a post-funeral gathering (I don’t want to use the word reception, since that word seems to imply something positive, or at least something important. Is there a proper term to use?) was scheduled to be held. Alyssa behaved beautifully there, just as she did at the funeral.

Before coming home, we stopped to see my brother, since he is literally ten minutes away from where Dan’s aunt lives. He was happy to see us, and the three of us enjoyed lunch (my brother), fruit (Dan) and a smoothie (me) at Panera Bread (my favorite child-free haunt). Dan and I read books (Stephen King for him, Philippa Gregory for me) and my brother used my laptop for a bit.

We got home around 5:30pm, and I was immediately surrounded by five hungry cats. Whoops. They ran out of kibbles early in the morning, poor things were obviously STARVING TO DEATH eleven hours later. So right back out I went, mother in tow, to pick up food from the pet store (of course the pet store nine miles away doesn’t carry the brand I buy; I had to drive about 16 miles to a store that does) and then to take her home.

These last few hours have been unproductive, to say the least. I should do some work tonight, but I’m too damn tired. Instead I’ve been reading, and I think I’ll finish up the night by working on my photgraphy blog’s theme some more.

  1. Soo….any hint on what the new photo blog is going to be called?

It sounds like a high energy day on a day where you have no energy!! :) – ha ha!! Glad it went off with no major problems.

  2. You’ve gotta love when they get held up at work. Stupid life and all its complications. This heat has been killer lately. Eff of humidity.

  3. Your sleeping situation sounds very similar to what I experienced last night, as well. However, when I have lack of sleep, it’s not good at all. My stomach hurts, I feel weak, etc. I really can’t explain how much I hate when I don’t sleep well, even though I do it to myself, heh :/ .-= Stephanie´s last blog ..Lack of motivation =-.

Having grown up in a Roman Catholic family and attending many funerals, I can safely say that the ‘reception’ is called a collation. Yeah, I know a lot about obscure things….

  5. Aw, sounds like one of those days you’re just a zombie for. I bet you are glad it’s over. Days like that are rough, even when you have enough sleep.

  6. i think i remember you saying something about coming up with a name for your photography thing a while back. I think your pics are so nice. lol i always think others pictures are nice…

t wanted to stop by b4 i leave to go have my yardsale ..because they have the slowest dialup on the planet at my grandmas.. so in case I don’t see ya b4 then i’lll be back sat/sun :)

  7. The “reception” event after a funeral, I used to call them wakes, but those, apparently, are actually part of the ceremony (at somebody’s house, traditionally with a viewing of the deceased – eep!). One could call them luncheons or they’re also called repasts. I don’t think that term is Catholic though, it’s probably just the general term for the gathering after a funeral.

I can’t wait to see your new photography blog :) I love your work.
