It’s about time!

The check from the life insurance policy my grandfather had has finally been issued. My mom spoke to the life insurance company on Thursday afternoon, and they confirmed that they sent it out via certified mail that day. They’re based in Illinois, so here’s to hoping she’ll have the check maybe tomorrow, or possibly on Monday or Tuesday, or definitely by Wednesday?

With that check she is getting herself a new car — a 2010 Kia Soul. She originally thought the check would have been much more (and it would have, if my grandfather hadn’t stopped paying the premiums in 2005), and at that time offered to purchase a new car for me as well. It didn’t pan out, obviously. But I’m not disappointed, because I refused to get really excited to begin with. The whole don’t count your chickens before they hatch kind of thing, you know?

In any case, I’ll still get a small sliver of the pie: we need a new couch. My mom is going to give us the money to get a new one. Dan has pretty much had it picked out for the last eight months, ever since he first laid eyes on the Lovesac when we were in Pittsburgh. His heart is set on the four cushion sectional, which is fine by me so long as we get it in earth. Our living room is so BLAND. I’m dying for color to spice it up. I’m thinking the dark brown sectional + brightly colored throw pillows + coordinating curtains. Whee!

Of course, nothing in this world comes for free. In exchange for a new sofa, I will be cleaning up the cluttered, hoarder’s haven my mother has turned her house into over the past few years, and I will be crate training and housebreaking the dog that pisses and shits all over her house, dominates the cat (Fritzy, which is partially why he is now with us) and in general is a misbehaving little rat. Fun times, fun times.

Sooooooooooooooooo, that’s what’s up. I’m so happy my mother will FINALLY have a car that is in working condition. Almost as happy as she is, I’m sure! And I’m also quite excited about getting a new couch. :) It’s partly the reason why I sweet-talked Dan into taking apart my desk and moving it into the bedroom. We now have plenty of room for a sectional!

  1. Awesome deal on the couch. I can’t believe you have to crate train her dog though. Dogs are, in my opinion, very particular to their owner and sometimes once they learn from that person they can be very finicky on who they listen to. Colby for example, will not obey just anybody. He’s more likely to listen to me or Randy since we discipline him even though he likes a few others. He also poops intentionally when he is left ANYWHERE that includes a baby sitter for him.

Then again, as we all know, your mother goes through animals like some of us go through clothing.

I think it’s great that your mom is getting a working car – no more having to tote her around which I’m sure you’re happy about. Just curious though, why does it always seem you have to give something in exchange for something your mother gives you? I mean, I don’t know…I guess with following your blog for so many years and seeing the stuff your mom has put you through and the things you’ve done for her, she should just be like ‘here, get a new couch for yourself’ without having to do any “extra work.” Idk, just my observation :D Either way, yay for new furniture :D

Glad to hear the check finally came through. Now your mom can have a dependable vehicle (even if it is only of those unsightly “boxes” :P ) without you and Dan having to help fix it/carry her around. I think that after all you have done for her, it would have been more appropriate that she had purchased the couch for you without expecting anything in return…but at least you can put those old springs to rest!

  4. I agree with the people who have said you shouldn’t have had to do anything “in return” for her buying you the couch. Judging by everything you’ve done for her in the past, it sounds like you’ve already “earned it”.

  5. Now maybe you won’t have drama regarding her car issues, which is only a plus. But I have a question? If she hasn’t trained the dog so far, and you train it and get it all sorted out, will it really hold when you’re not there to enforce it? I don’t know, I don’t have animals. I’m just thinking in terms of my child and how I try to teach her things and when I’m not around her grandparents let her do it anyway. That’s how it seems it will happen with your mom.

At any rate Yay for the new couch. It’s going to look great!
