Housework is dangerous

This morning I was reaching up to the bed sheets on the shelf in Ryan’s closet, when I stumbled to the side and knocked over a fairly heavy toy that we were storing in there (we “cycle” toys every few months so that there’s always something new and exciting to play with). It fell and crashed into the inner glass window pane that Dan has apparently been storing in the closet. A big chunk of it and some little pieces broke out. I leaned down to pick up the toy, thinking as I did, “Okay Jenn, don’t be a dumb ass and slice yourself on the glass”. Right as I thought that the top of my right hand slid under a big chunk of glass. I remember feeling a sharp pinch and looking down to see what looked like a bit of skin pushed back, and thinking, “Okay, that was dumb, but no big deal!”.

Wrong. That thought was no sooner processed when the blood started welling and gushing out. So quickly, in fact, that the DEEPLY sliced skin pushed up from the force of it. Whoops. I ran to the bathroom to rinse it out, in case there were any shards of glass in it, and let me tell you, I actually HISSED from the pain caused by the water pushing against the slice. You read that in books — how the character clenched their teeth and sucked air in and hissed. Well, I seriously did it.

Because I have low platelets (blood work I had done a few months ago definitely explains why I have petechiae all over my arms, and some on my thighs and chest as well!), clotting took a bit… approximately three wadded up tissues and four bandages, and plenty of pressure and hand elevation. By the time the bleeding did stop I was at the point where I was contemplating running down to the doctor’s office for stitches.

Of course I have the cut in a weird area that isn’t easily covered and kept covered by bandaids. It’s on the top of my right pinky finger, on the left side, not quite where the finger meets the hand, and sort of around the webbing area. There’s no easy way to wrap a bandage around that area. So for the time being I have two bandages criss-crossed, and two pieces of medical tape criss-crossed on top of that. I’m doing my best not to flex my pinky (I’m currently typing without it, which is awkward!), so I don’t break open the clot.

Pics, of course, because I’m gory like that. (But after the cut, so if you’re squeamish, don’t look!)

I did finally get the bed made.

Right now I’m about to grab the kids and head out. I just realized that Alyssa’s birthday is in three weeks (October 27th!), which means her birthday party is in less than three weeks (October 24th!), so RIGHT NOW would be a very good time to get those party invitations sent out.

  1. Yikes! But at least it wasn’t worse. That could have been really, really bad!

Sorry to hear about the cut. I hope it heals soon. Jordan’s birthday is on the 15th. We’re doing Transformers like last year. He is so crazy about them.

Oh I hate cuts like that! They seem to take twice as long to heal because they are in a bendy spot. :(
Hey! My bday is the 29th! October is a great month ;) My bday parties have almost always been Halloween themed, which is fine with me, I love the holiday..it’s so much fun! :D

You need some steri strips on that since the bandaids wont really work, but you can put a bandaid over the steri strips.
