Better food = better me

In my quest to lose weight, I have not only reduced portions and drastically reduced the bad things I eat and how often I eat them and in what quantity, I have also been paying more attention to the “good” foods that I buy. For dinners especially, I try to pick lean meats, whole-grain and/or low fat sides, and plenty of vegetables. I’m also branching out more with the type of vegetables I eat and serve to Dan and the kids. Before you’d find bags of corn, green beans, peas, broccoli and mixed vegetables in our freezer. Now you’ll find those, plus blends of seasoned vegetables, and things like whole soybeans and mixtures of mushrooms, peppers, onions, baby corn, water chestnuts and asparagus. Dan isn’t too thrilled, Ryan is anti-vegetable entirely, but Alyssa likes vegetables, and I make it a rule to eat full servings of vegetables at meals, even if I’m not too fond of them.

With meat I’m especially picky. No more fried foods (except on occasion, and even then it’s in moderation, and is fried in peanut oil and thoroughly drained and then patted dry), I take the skin off of chicken, and when looking for beef, I gravitate towards the displays that hold Natural Beef, since that’s where I can usually find 93% lean.

Speaking of beef, who shops for it online? I’ve never bought food online, but I know that you can buy just about any edible item online. Niman Ranch is a company that specializes in organic and natural beef, lamb, poultry and other specialty products, and they do have an online store you can check out! If you’re looking to get away from the grocery store, or you want to buy meat that you can’t find in your local grocery store(s), then maybe Niman Ranch would be worth looking into. You can see their selection of meat at mysteak.com.

You should buy some fresh veggies… so much better than frozen! Except for frozen corn, which I like better than regular corn haha. I think that it is so great that you are keeping to eating healthy — most people, including myself, can’t do that!

Have you tried ground turkey? It’s supposed to be healthier for you than ground beef. Jennie-O’s is too expensive for me so I buy Zackey’s (not sure if you have it out there). One thing that you have to be careful about when buying ground turkey though is the fat and calories…It can be just as high as the ground beef! I usually compare an off brand to Jennie-O. It tastes the same, it just cooks to a white-ish color. Kinda weird. Might want to give it a shot! =]
