Everyone and their mother has a domain these days, my own mother included. But if you don’t know of anyone who can host you, or you don’t know any good recommendations, where should you start? Well, you can start with a review site that covers both domain name registrars and hosting companies, such as Web Hosting Geeks. Their specialty is the review of web hosting companies, but they profile many registrars as well.
In addition to finding reviews and links to companies that provide both personal and business hosting, you can find general information regarding web hosting. Whether you’re completely new to the idea of having your very own space on the world wide web, or you simply want to find out some more advanced info, Web Hosting Geeks and the WHG blog can probably provide you with some answers.
I really wish I had taken the time to research domains and hosting when I first decided I wanted my own website, which was way back when in 2001. But I didn’t, and wound up paying $20 a month for a very small and limited hosting plan; and close to $50 a YEAR for a .org domain registration. Ridiculous, I know. But hey, the lesson has certainly been learned! I now pay no more than $8 per year for a domain registration (minus the .nu domains, of course), and wouldn’t dream of paying more than $20/month for a personal reseller account.
