Can you hear me now?

Back in January my T-Mobile G1‘s call button crapped out on me. Half the time I can answer phone calls, but only if I really mash down on the call button. The other half of the time? It’s a no-go. I have to send the caller straight to voicemail, then call them back. Dan and my mom were aware of the issue and would just call and quickly hang up, or text me; other people had no idea, of course, so I’d have to call them back right away and sound like a moron.

At that time, I wasn’t yet eligible for a phone upgrade, so I bided my time. And bided some more. And last night, after missing yet another call, I logged into my T-Mobile account and squealed happily when I saw that I was eligible for an upgrade. I planned on just getting another white G1, but the T-Mobile myTouch 3G was almost $75 cheaper, so I opted for that instead. Same sexy operating system that makes it so easy to look for an orange county web designer, but packaged in a sexy new phone. So I put the G1 up for sale on eBay (and yes, I highlighted the fact that the call button does not consistently work), and it amazingly sold in twelve minutes.

This morning, after Ryan and I met my mom for breakfast at a local buffet (I know, post-op gastric bypass fat chick at a buffet, laugh it up! I ate a few bites of a ham & cheese omelette, a bite of Ryan’s sausage, and a few spoonfuls of grits. I then went to the bathroom and threw up about a third of what I ate. Not nearly worth the $6.99 I paid for breakfast, but oh well.), I went straight to the local T-Mobile store, and got there just minutes after they opened. I got there so soon not because I was excited about getting a new phone (though I was), but because that store seems like it’s ALWAYS so freaking busy, and Ryan tends to spazz out in stores that are full of loud, wandering people. The last time I was there was last year to pick up a black G1 for Dan, and Ryan nearly screamed the place down during the half hour I had to wait to be waited on. I got plenty of dirty looks and death glares, but not person offered to let me go ahead so I could get Ryan the hell out of there. Figures.

Whoops, major tangent there. Anyway, despite getting there a few minutes after the store opened, all three reps were busy with customers. But we didn’t have to wait long, and within fifteen minutes or so I had my new T-Mobile myTouch 3G in my hands. It’s sexy. Rawr.

Just for kicks, I took the time to look up all of the cell phones I’ve had in the past ten years. My first one was something like the Motorola V120. I don’t think that’s the exact one, but it’s close. I remember getting it from VoiceStream in the fall of 2000, and using pre-paid cards with it. It was purple, and it had a radio. Ooh!

My second phone was a refurb Motorola V60, picked up for $50 from a Verizon Wireless store in the spring of 2003. Ooh, flip phone! Jenn’s movin’ on up in the world.

My dad co-signed with me on a contract account with T-Mobile in the early summer of 2004, since he was worried about me driving back and forth to work, what with being pregnant with Alyssa and all that. Say hello to the Nokia 3595.

In the winter of 2005 I used a small portion of our tax return to upgrade to the uber sexy Samsung E315. Color screen, spiffy LED indicator light on the outside of the flip phone… I had it made!

Tax Return ’06 enabled me to upgrade to the Motorola Razr v3. I went to the T-Mobile store with no idea of what I wanted, and walked out with the Razr. I called my mom, only to find out she picked up the same phone the day before. She lorded my supposed “copycatting” over me for years. Literally, years.

In the winter of 2007 I purchased two used T-Moble Sidekick IIs from from Anna. I kept one, and sold the other to my mom. That phone forever spoiled me with a QWERTY keyboard.

In the summer of 2007 I absolutely drooled over the T-Mobile Dash, and used my unused ’07 upgrade to get it for $100. Sa-weet! I loved that phone, until the battery started to die, that is. It gave out after nine months, and ceased to hold a charge for longer than a half hour.

Finally, winter of 2009. Yes, I managed to hang onto a phone for more than a year. Imagine that! I was totally sold on the T-Mobile G1 after checking out Jason’s, and made it my own. In white. I mention the color because at that point, the G1s had just come on the market, and white was a very hard color to find it in. I had to drove down to Philadelphia and hit up four different stores before I found one!

And here we are, winter of 2010. The need-for-a-new-phone bug hit again, but at least this time I had an excuse to act on it. And since I sold my G1 first, I only had a $18 difference to make up. ;) Hello T-Mobile myTouch 3G! We’re going to become very good friends.

  1. My first 2 phones = your first 2 phones. Love it, haha! My T-Mobile contract is up in June. I’m upset I have to wait that long before my upgrade. I’m absolutely dying to get the Nexus One.

  2. I was playing with it the other day when I took back my Blackberry to Sprint >_< I'm not a fan of the rolling ball but thats because I prefer the track pad thats on the Blackberries. Love getting new phones though. Can't wait till I can get a new one.

  3. I love my MyTouch! I also got it in white because you don’t see that a lot. Robby ended up getting a black one, hehe. We wanted to get the Nexus, but I’m sorry Google, until you come out with a viable option for family plans we’ll have to pass… and who knows how long we’ll have to wait for that! Anyway, glad you like your phone. It took me a bit of getting used to switching from the iPhone, but I love mine too. <3

I have a T-Mobile account, but I got it just for the Sidekick 08. Which I LOVED. I also have Verizon with my husband (cause I had a Razr too and of course, there’s no internet on that phone) but we recently switched to Sprint and I got a Palm Pixi… my SK has been out of battery for about 3 months now and I haven’t really cared to charge it since I got the Pixi LOL!

  5. I go phones like crazy! My 1st phone was similar to your first one also lol too funny.. I’m currently awaiting UPS to delivery me the LG Eve.. which then means I’ll be passing on my blackberry curve 8900 to my hubby!

glad to see I’m not the only one who loves phones and goes through about as many as me!

I always had cheap phones until I recently got a Blackberry Curve. I will probably never change – it is more than I could ever need lol.

  7. Wow! Here I am stuck with a Net10 cell phone that won’t even allow me to make international calls. I am so tempted to get a new phone since the one I have is only my second one. Mytouch here I come! Enjoy your new phone. :)

  8. Yeah for new cell phones! I could def use your shirt that reads “I void warranties” because I did to my blackberry curve :( but verizon was so nice to let me buy a brand new one for a 1 year contract price and not paying full price for it.

    Your phone is sexy!!
