Wearable Art

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to try out Wearable Art with Alyssa and Ryan. Wearable art is just what it sounds like — art you can wear! The concept is simple: provide kids with illustrations to color in with special permanent pastel crayons. ColorYourClothes.com offers several designs for kids, including space ships, a princess crown, a peace sign and flowers, and a cute little train. Sizes run from XS (a child’s 2-4) to XL (a youth’s 14-16), so there are plenty of picture and design options for all kids.

Alyssa receives the Princess design, and Ryan received the Space design. Each t-shirt came packaged with a set of separately-packaged pastel crayons. Included instructions made the whole process seem quite simple: color in the illustration, cover the illustration with a clean sheet of white paper, then use a hot iron to permanently set the colors.

The process really was as easy as it sounded. Alyssa and Ryan had a blast coloring in their custom t-shirts, especially since that day was a rainy one and we were cooped up indoors, and it took me less than five minutes to pre-heat the iron, prep the shirts and then iron them. And just like that, the shirts were ready to go:

Alyssa and Ryan have worn their t-shirts several times since then, and never get tired of telling people that they colored them in themselves. I’m not only impressed at the vividness of colors, I’m impressed at the sticking power of them! Both shirts have been washed at least half of a dozen times, always with bleach, and there hasn’t been much in the way of fading. If anything, the initial black outline of the design has shown a teensy bit of fading, while the colors themselves are still as bright as when they were first applied.

With birthdays and the holidays coming up, I am definitely keeping Wearable Art in mind for future projects and events!

  2. This would make a great gift for my two little cousins! Raven says she’s too old for that stuff. Too old? She’s 13! I’m 30 and want to make one for myself!

  3. That’s really neat. I wonder how well it would work on coloured shirts

  4. I cannot get over how big they’ve gotten!! Seems like just yesterday when Alyssa was born!!
