I honestly think it would be easier to keep socks on Leah than on Ryan. Back when Alyssa was in diapers, I laid down the “No streaking until you’re potty-trained!” rule. But to be honest with you, I never thought to make any rules about wearing socks, since I took it for granted that my kids would keep their socks on, particularly during the colder months of the year (have I mentioned that we keep our thermostat around 62°, even during the coldest months of the year, in order to keep heating costs down?). Alyssa is fine with wearing socks. Ryan? Not so much. His autism and sensory issues get in the way of even the most “basic” of routines, such as putting on a pair of socks and keeping them on. In any given day he’ll go through 3+ pair of socks, and n a “bad” day our house looks like a sock minefield.. He wants to wear them, but he can’t tolerate the feel of them on his feet for very long.
So when I recently read about Knit-Rite’s SmartKnitKIDS Seamless Socks, I knew I had to try a pair of them with Ryan. These socks are completely seamless, and they lack the elastic binding and formed heel designs that can chafe and rub and irritate even normal sock wearers. The socks are held in place due to its cocooning-like material and form, as well as a very soft, non-binding cuff that goes around the outside of the top of the socks.
Alyssa and Ryan each received pairs of SmartKnitKIDS Seamless Socks to try out — purple and white for Alyssa, and white for Ryan. Alyssa was immediately taken with them, but I think that’s more because of the color and less because of the design (although she did remark that the socks looked “weird” since they were straight and not shaped like normal socks).
And Ryan? He wore the same pair for several hours, and when he did take them off, it was only because the tiniest drop of water imaginable had gotten onto one of them, which of course in the World of Ryan rendered them no good. But the fact that he handed them to me and asked me to clean them instead of simply discarding them wherever he happened to be at the moment said a lot about SmartKnitKIDS Seamless Socks.
My thoughts? I really like these socks! They feel oh-so-soft and comfortable, so much in fact that I’m very tempted to purchase a pair or two of the SmartKnitBIGKids Seamless Socks for myself. But more importantly, Ryan seems to tolerate them better than normal socks. He is taking them off, but he’s going for longer periods of time with them on, and isn’t fidgeting with them quite as much as he does with his other socks.
I would definitely recommend SmartKnitKIDS Seamless Socks to anyone who has sensory issues with socks. And since they come in a variety of sizes, styles, and colors, everyone can get themselves a pair!
