For the past week I have been slowly working my way through Roy Peter Clark’s The Glamour of Grammar. The book approaches, dissects and informs on the many aspects of grammar. But it’s not just a condensed version of a textbook. Rather, The Glamour of Grammar approaches grammar and usage of the English language in a fun & informative manner. I have always loved to read and write, but was often bored to tears in English class, yet I really loved reading The Glamour of Grammar. I still have a few chapters to go, but I’ve made it through over three quarters of them (there’s 50 total), and I can honestly say that I’ve learned a lot. It’s amazing how many intricacies, controversial methods and even hot-topic issues there are with grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Speaking of spelling, did you know that you lie down, rather than lay down? To lie down is to recline; to lay down is to place something down. Interesting, right? I completely admit to using lay and lie interchangeably, but now that I know there is a definitive difference, I plan on using the proper words within the proper context.
Anyway, if you’re a writer, an avid reader, or just someone who is interested in learning more about grammar and the like, you should definitely pick up a copy of The Glamour of Grammar.

I haven’t had a chance to read this, but it’s on my night stand right under my alarm clock. Hopefully I’ll find time soon. I also loved a book much like it, Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss. She touches on some of the controversy surrounding grammar and punctuation, mainly the fact that rules are being relaxed and even done away with in our current society.
