When September ends

In the course of five hours or so yesterday afternoon I managed to fill up most of my September. First, my mom and I made plans to take my brothers (and most likely Alyssa) to Pittsburgh for the weekend of the 17th – 19th. We’ll leave on Friday afternoon, check into a motel, hit up Kennywood on Saturday, then do a few sightseeing things in and around the city on Sunday before heading home.

Then — surprise! — my boss let me know that we will probably be attending a blogging conference on the weekend of the 24th – 26th. The location of this one involves flying, which means that I’ll be switching to Ready to Crap My Pants Mode the day or so before, seeing as how I have a fear of heights and all that. Just ask Dan: I can barely manage to keep my shit together on ferris wheels and sky lifts. (Roller coasters freak me out too, but they’re fun and you’re flying on them way too fast to have time to think about plunging to your death.) No, I have never been on a plane, and no, I’m not really relishing the thought of getting on one. I’ll do it, obviously, and will do my best to avoid having a nervous breakdown, but I think I’ll hit up my doctor for some kind of relaxant beforehand, heh. Something strong enough to take the edge off my anxiety, but not so strong that I’ll be rendered unconscious. I need to find that nice, happy medium. Demerol sounds appealing, though according to Dan I started crying in the hallway as they wheeled me to the OR (for my gastric bypass surgery). I have no recollection of that, though I do remember them initially giving me the Demerol, and I remember being IN the OR and begging to be put out, haha. So on second thought, with the loss of some memory there, maybe Demerol isn’t such a good choice. ;)

Also, I want to go to the beach, my kids want to go to the beach, my boss wants to go to the beach, and her kids want to go to the beach. We’re both about twoish hours from the beach, so it makes perfect sense for the six of us to meet up there for a day trip — and that’s exactly what we’re planning on doing on September 11th, 2010. Speaking of the beach, I have some plus size swimwear laying around that I don’t need. Does anyone want a very gently used (and appropriately washed/stored) black swimsuit, size 14? Let me know!

Alyssa starts kindergarten next Monday, Ryan starts his autism support preschool this week and regular preschool on the 13th of September. Oh, and my brothers come HOME in TWO DAYS. Translation? September is going to be a wild ride. And seeing as how it took me nearly two weeks to get over freakin’ bronchitis and get my voice back (it’s still not 100% though, which is Beyond Annoying at this point), I better get enough rest and consume enough proteins and pile on the vitamins, lest I wind up coming down with the Black Plague by the end of next month.

Speaking of Alyssa (not the plague!), I took her in for a physical this morning. The doctor noted that she didn’t do too well on the vision chart, so I then took her over to our optometrist for an appointment. Surprise — guess who needs glasses? She’s “mildly” nearsighted and has an astigmatism (I have one of those; they suck; Alyssa, you have my condolences!), so her glasses order is in and should be ready for pick-up next Monday. She got flouncy with me when she realized that she couldn’t wear her new glasses* today. Oops. :/

*$9.00 glasses, heh. I’m not spending more than $20 on a pair of glasses for a FIVE YEAR OLD. Instead, I’ll get another 1-2 cheap pairs from Zenni Optical, so we’ll have backups for the backups!

Well, it’s putting-kidlets-to-bed-time, and then time for me to go stain our tub pink (Special Effects in Cherry Bomb, ooh!), so I suppose I’ll end this entry… here.

  1. Awww Alyssa looks so adorable!! I hate flying, I refuse to do it after I had a bad experience. Enjoy your trip! I am so glad your brothers are coming home!

Ahh, she looks so adorable! When did you first start wearing glasses? Was it as young as Alyssa is now? I started at age 8, I think – and they sure as heck weren’t $9! lol

  3. Good luck on the flying. I’m the same way about flying & heights – and elevators. :/

Alyssa is adorable in those glasses! I agree with you on not getting anything too expensive for her – kids tend to break their glasses without even trying. LOL

  4. I always have trouble on the takeoffs and landings. I don’t have a fear of heights but a fear of falling. I can be on the 44th story (like at BlogHer) behind a window and be just fine, but on a second story balcony I begin getting nervous.

Funny you should mention ferris wheels. We went to a local fair and there was a ferris wheel. NHL, TheAngelForever’s father, TheAngelForever’s brother and my neice, S, were going on. For some reason, I thought I’d go on too to get some photos from the top. What I didn’t count on was that the ferris wheel car would need to stop in mid-air to let other people on. Neither did I know that the car would wobble back and forth. I was gripping NHL’s hand, trying not to let him know I was afraid, but terrified that one of us would go plummeting overboard. Luckily, nobody did and I got some good photos. (Still not sure I’d go on it again.)

    hey jenn,
for the zenni optical o- do you just go to your eye doctor and get a copy of your perscription to be able to give the info online when ordering??

alyssa looks adorable with those glasses too!

    thanks!

  6. @Michelle: I had my first pair when I was eight years old! Dan was lucky — he didn’t need them until he was in high school.

@TechyDad: you’re lucky that you were still able to get some nice shots. I freak out too badly to even think about using my camera. :/ I force myself to ride a ferris wheel at every park to try and get OVER my issues, but so far I’m not having any luck, lol.

@katy: pretty much! Or you can use an older prescription, or pull the numbers out of your ass — Zenni Optical doesn’t verify anything. They take the numbers you input during the checkout process at face value and produce the lenses accordingly! :)

Aww Alyssa looks great in her glasses!

I got my first pair around that age – my mom took me to the eye doctor right before I started school. However, unlike Alyssa, I pulled a total 4-year-old diva moment and refused to wear any glasses that weren’t pink. My poor mother drove all around the city looking for pink glasses that came in a small enough size for my face. None were to be found, so she had to go to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto and get them custom-made, which I’m sure ended up costing more than $9, haha!

Good to see that she looks happy about wearing them =)
