Baby GoGo

Allow me to preface this blog entry by saying that I can only recall having one baby doll during my childhood. It wasn’t that I didn’t like dolls — I was just turned off by the extreme girliness of all of the dolls my mom bought for me and that I myself saw in stores. That one baby doll I did finally hang on to? I found it abandoned in a shopping cart in a grocery store. It was bald, it had nondescript blue eyes, and the clothing was white and not all that feminine. Really, the baby doll could have passed for a boy or a girl — and that suited me just fine.

Baby GoGo What’s funny is I forgot all about that doll until I heard about Baby GoGo. Baby GoGo is a child’s baby doll that has been designed specifically to not strongly resemble any particular race, culture, or even gender. Instead, the doll has a medium skin tone, pretty but not super-girly or “cherubic” eyes and facial features, and bright orange and green outfits that don’t relegate it to being a boy or a girl. Instead, Baby GoGo is designed to appeal to boys and girls and any preference — make it a boy, make it a girl, take your pick! As the company’s creator, Margaret Winchester, puts it, “Baby GoGo is a colorful, realistic doll [...] with a soft body and bright, contemporary clothing and accessories that mirror today’s modern look.”

Baby GoGo is packaged as the baby GoGo Goes Home Doll Set, which includes the doll, cozy pajamas and a matching hat, an adorably detailed and soft baby blanket, and a storybook, which details the baby coming home and getting to know his/her family members.

When Baby GoGo arrived, Alyssa was at kindergarten, but Ryan was too eager to tear into the surprise box (from the “Ooh Pee Ess twuck!”) to wait, so I went ahead and helped him to open it. Ryan’s a boy, obviously, and I had the stereotypical, “Oh, he won’t be that interested” thought, but I put it aside and got all excited with him as we opened up the doll and checked out the accessories (besides Baby GoGo, we also received the diaper bag accessory set, which includes a diaper bag and a cloth diaper>!).

In case you can’t tell, Ryan is most definitely excited about Baby GoGo, which he promptly named Ryan (“Wyan”). Alyssa also had a grand time dressing and undressing Ryan, carrying him around, talking to him, and then setting him up in the little cat bed she keeps next to her bed for whatever stuffed animal she has chosen as her favorite for the time being.

Ryan took right to Baby GoGo, without any “this toy is for Lissy” or “this toy is for girls” comments that he might have made if Baby GoGo was all dolled up in pink. Likewise, Alyssa was intrigued at the idea of being able to choose Baby GoGo’s gender. They both liked the realistic clothing, diaper, and diaper bag, and both enjoyed the storybook that comes with the doll — we’ve read it several times now!

Baby GoGo can be purchased for $39.99 right on the website. Don’t forget to pick up the cute diaper bag accessory kit!

Disclosure: Baby GoGo sent me a doll free of charge, in exchange for my honest review of their product.
