I have long hair, but if it’s summertime, or I’m going to be on-the-go for the day, I usually put it up. Ponytails are the gold standard, and they get the job done, but ponytails bore me after a while. They also tend to give me headaches at the end of the day, and even when they don’t they irritate because it’s hard to rest your head against anything — such as the seat of your car — with that hard protrusion sticking out. So I tend to switch around between ponytails and octopus clips. Octopus clips are pretty spiffy, but they too tend to give me headaches by the end of the day (from the ends of the clip digging into my scalp), and they also protrude outwards, making it uncomfortable to lean my head against anything.

Flexi-8 So when I discovered Flexi-8, I knew I had to try it. The Flexi-8 is a special type of hair clip that is inspired by those pricey beaded chopsticks that many department stores sell. The company is run by a husband and wife team, John and Missy, who started out making the clips in their garage and selling them to local retailers and at local farmers’ markets.

What I love about the Flexi-8 clip is that it is extremely flexible and versatile. Unlike other types of hair accessories, which generally allow you to create only 1-2 styles, there are many ways that you can wear the Flexi-8. Also, Flexi-8 is available in six different sizes, so no matter your hair type, thickness or desired hair style, you will be able to play around to achieve fun results.

I received five different Flexi-8 hair clips to try out. I was immediately drawn to the largest Flexi-8, which has a flower in the middle of its design. I like to pile all of my hair on top of my head, and even after losing some of it after my surgery there’s still enough of it left to qualify as “thick”, and so regular-sized hairbands and clips don’t always cut it. I really love the Flexi-8′s flexibility — the flexibility of the barrette and the curved design of the chopstick/pin means no more having to flatten or re-shape your gathered hair in order to make a hair clip fit around it and close. The Flexi-8 easily adapts, and makes it simple to get your gathered hair secured. And since it’s made out of metal, you don’t have to worry about busted hair clips!

As you can see, the largest Flexi-8 is perfect for my desired hairstyle!

A similar up-do that give me a bit of a rooster tail — oops!

Alyssa was drawn to the smaller butterfly-adorned Flexi-8, which is the perfect size to pull back almost all of her hair (because of her layered hairstyle the bottom portion is too short to pull up). For once she didn’t complain about the “tightness” of having her hair back, and quite happily left it in all day long (until she left the clip at kindergarten, but that’s another story, hopefully one that will have a happy ending, as I did email her teacher a photo of the clip and asked her to check lost & found for it!), and showed it off to anyone who walked within ten feet of her.

If you’re interested in Flexi-8, I strongly recommend that you first watch the demonstration videos on the website, and check out all six sizes, before you make your selection. You can watch the sizing video and read detailed explanations of the six sizes here.
