DIY home repairs

One thing I love about my husband is that if he doesn’t know how to adjust/fix/make something, he figures it out. He’s by no means an auto mechanic, yet he has successfully installed stereos, replaced rotors and brake pads, and more recently, replaced an alternator in my car. He didn’t go to school to learn how to become an electrician, yet he has wired new and existing outlets in our house, fixed a broken outlet in the kids’ bathroom, and installed ceiling fans in all three bedrooms, and another one in the living room. And he’s no technician or repair man, yet he has fixed my washer, and used various washer parts to fix my mother’s at one point as well.

We’re all about DIY home repairs whenever possible. Doing home repairs on our own, first and foremost, is a heck of a lot cheaper than paying someone else to do it. That bathroom outlet Dan fixed? It took him a couple of hours of messing around to get it working. I shudder to think of what an electrician would have charged just to walk in the house. Those ceiling fans? They were also quite tricky to install, particularly in our bedroom. Again, the fees an electrician would have required… ugh. And we both know from our first Kia Spectra just how much an alternator replacement would have run us – $500! Our do-it-yourself price? Roughly $180 — the cost of a new alternator, and a handy mechanic book that shows explodey diagrams of every element of my Kia Spectra. DIY home repairs are also preferable because you get to choose when and how to do them, and you have more control over getting things done.

Dan has used PartSelect in the past to find parts info, and now he’s even more excited about future repairs since he’ll have the opportunity to check out interactive guides and installations. And I’m excited too, because that means I can compile a Honey-Do list and actually get it done! ;)
