Wall-to-wall carpeting or area rugs?

Today, on a whim, Dan attacked the hallway outside of the kids’ rooms with a hammer and a screwdriver. His plan is to take down some strips, sand down, caulk (or is it spackle?) some rough areas, and then we’re going to re-paint! Whoo hoo! We’ll be doing the same thing to the living room (and then the kitchen, and finally the kids’ bedrooms), though its shade of paint will be darker than the hallway’s. Once we’ve done that, we’re going to replace the kids’ bedroom doors (we’re getting those pre-hung ones, heh). Then it’s time to decide on floor treatments. We’re torn between upgrading to better wall-to-wall carpeting, or choosing the route of hardwood floors with strategically placed area rugs. With our furniture and the right shade of hardwood flooring, I think a jute rug would look great.

With carpeting, you have the carpet fibers to kind of catch and “hold” the dust and such until you get around to vacuuming (which I do almost daily; you kind of have to when you have four cats and a dog!). But with hardwood floors and area rugs, there isn’t as much carpet fiber available to trap all of that stuff. But I might be willing to live with that, because I do really like the look of hardwood floors. Now it’s just a matter of choosing between a bamboo rug and a seagrass rug!

For those of you with pets in your household, would you go for carpeting or hardwood floors? And if you do have hardwood floors, what kind of cleaning supplies would you recommend having on hand?

I am the proud owner of 2 long haired cats and 1 big dog. We used to have carpet and traded it in for Laminate flooring throughout our house. I LOVE it and would NEVER go back to carpet…ever! The hair kind of just accumulates behind doors and underneath chairs/couches. It won’t stay all over the floor. I think it’s worse with carpet because it will just sort of stay there. Just my 2 cents.
