I am slowly evolving from being a mom of very young children to a mom of youngish children. Youngish independent children. And I love it. Today, for instance, I took them to the dentist. We all piled into my car and got into our respective seats and buckled our own seatbelts (forever gone are the days of having to buckle each kid in individually before getting into my own seat, whoo!), and at the dentist’s office I flipped through my Nook (as much as you can flip through an electronic book reader, anyway) while the kids were taken back one at a time for their cleanings and teeth inspections. Neither have cavities and were praised on their twice-daily teeth brushing habits1.
However, to rain on my little “look how big my kids are!” parade, Alyssa has a lower baby tooth that will need to be pulled next month in order to make way for two permanent teeth that are coming in, unless it comes out on its own before then. (I haven’t shared that delightful news with her yet.) And Ryan… my autistic-almost-five-year-old is still very much head-banging, only instead of banging his head against walls and doors and pieces of furniture, he is getting out that urge to self-stimulate by grinding his teeth. Badly. The dental assistant shrugged off the need for a mouth guard until his permanent teeth come in, but after I came home and talked it over with Daniel (and the internet… perhaps), I called the office up and demanded an appointment for the fitting of one now, so we can protect what’s left of his baby teeth and hopefully correct this behavior long before his permanent teeth make an appearance.
Today is one of those days where I woke up late, the weather is cold and dreary, I’m waiting on several things (including moolah), and I haven’t yet accomplished what I intended to accomplish no later than 11:00am. And since it’s Wednesday, that means that the evening will be rushed and broken up, first with an early dinner and then with the 5:40pm dash out the door to get the kids to Awana Club by 6:00pm. And since it’s Jason’s 28th birthday, I’m going out to dinner with him while the kids are at Awana, so I won’t have those two hours to work. Oh well — there’s always time to work!

That’s awesome about no cavities and I agree that they should focus on Ryan’s teeth now, instead of waiting until his permanent teeth come in. I hate hectic days myself, especially when I don’t have time to get work done ahead of time.
It’s definitely a great idea to get the mouthguard and hopefully stop the grinding while he’s young. It’s a really bad habit of mine and it causes all kinds of issues.
Also, this is the first time I’ve been to the site (and not just the feed) in awhile and I love the new design.
