I sometimes joke that the cost of replacement ink cartridges for my printer wind up being nearly the cost of a new printer, and you know what? I’m not too far off the mark. My brother has a basic printer that my mom purchased for $40. Two name-brand ink cartridges for my printer will run me over $34 with tax. So for a few dollars more, I can get myself a brand new printer. Sad, huh? It’s the cost of ink that has stopped me from replacing all of the ink cartridges in a $800 photo printer that I scored for $350 a few years ago on eBay. It uses eight or nine “regular” single-color cartridges, plus four special types of cartridges — we’re talking over $300 in ink cartridges by the time the dust settles!
Fortunately, there is such a thing as cheap ink. Companies such as InkGrabber.com are able to slash prices on the cost of their printer ink by using recycled, refurbished and often re-manufactured cartridges, without reducing the quality of the ink they contain. I have actually ordered from InkGrabber.com before, both directly and from eBay, and I’ve always been pleased with the quality of the ink they sell. I know from firsthand experience that it is possible to have decent, OEM-standards printer ink for a variety of printers, including my pricey photo printer and my compact photo printer, without paying typical retail prices.
