Bring on the heat

Summer has finally arrived, so it seems. Just a week ago the temps were in the low- to mid-seventies; both yesterday and today it is in the upper eighties, and humid. The latter I could happily do without, but I’m all about the former. While I initially dread wearing tank tops (bingo flaps, anyone?), I do like being nice and cool in them. The downside, however, of having turquoise hair (it looks more aqua to me, to be honest), is that it clashes with more than a few of my tank tops. Oops. Today I said screw it and pranced out with my aqua hair and a salmon-colored tank top. Dan told me I looked like cotton candy. I invited him to come lick me. ;)

In an hour we’re leaving to go over to the local YMCA, and I can’t wait. Our primary reason for going is to join the “soft” opening of the pool, which will be accompanied by a barbecue and party. The event is from 4-9, and includes swimming (to say Alyssa and Ryan are excited for the first dip of the season is the understatement of the year…), the barbecue and tons of food, a family-friendly movie shown later, and the opportunity to join the YMCA. That’s the other reason Dan and I are going — we’ve been meaning to get a family membership to the YMCA (which includes free childcare!), and now’s the perfect opportunity. Since Dan isn’t much of a pool person, I can totally see him heading off to go work out while I hang with the kids. I don’t know if I’m going into the water or not, unless I need to fish out a floundering kid. Today and yesterday have really been the only hot days so far, so that water is probably FRIGID. I have no desire to catch hypothermia, so I’ll probably hang out poolside with a book. But I’ll go in my swimsuit, of course, just in case the floundering kid thing happens. I doubt it though — Alyssa is an excellent swimmer, and Ryan isn’t far behind her in his determination to stay above water so he can go off the diving board without complaint or question from the lifeguards.

Right now I’m chilling — literally, this damn central air conditioning is much more efficient than I could have ever dreamed — in the bedroom, basking in the short-lived quiet. This morning Dan, Ryan and I (Alyssa was in school) went to a local Amish-owned grocery outlet to stock up on food. For $199.02 we walked out with what would have easily cost at least $500 at a regular grocery store. Score! Note to self: go shopping there more often. I’ll just need to go to Target or our local grocery store for fresh meat, produce, milk, bread and eggs, as the selection the outlet has is limited, and not any cheaper than what’s in the regular stores. The downside of an exploding shopping cart worth of groceries is that it took me two and a half hours to put it all away. I played real life Tetris with the kitchen cabinets, refrigerator, freezer, and deep chest freezer that we have in our shed. The other downside? The cabinets are exploding. But then again, in this day and age and with the current economy, who am I to complain about cabinets that are bursting with food? (But really, I feel like a hoarder. You should see my six packs of 20-ct beef hot dogs, my four cases of Capri Sun, my jumbo bags of frozen vegetables, my eight boxes of Hamburger Helper, and the giant case of Propel I bought for Dan.)

  1. Have fun at the pool party(my god I typed poop party. LOL)! I envy your ac. We have none and the heat kills me. I’ve been using the fan in our room for a couple of weeks now and it’s not even warm yet.

  2. I wish Missouri would make up it’s mind on whether it wants to stay cold or hot. We had a few of those hot, muggy days but now we’re back down into the lower sixties. Stupid Missouri weather.

    Enjoy the pool party!

  3. A huge congrats on the weight loss, you look great! I’m digging the blue hair! YMCA is a huge benefit for families. A few of my friends have their children enrolled in day camps and all kinds of sports to keep the kids busy and give them a little ‘me’ time on top of it. It’s a big plus if you want to have lunch with the hubby without being hit with random flying food from a little one, heh.
