Back to school season has arrived

FIFTEEN DAYS TO GO! Oh, I’m sorry – that was just me checking on how many days are left between now and the first day of school. I’m super-excited this year because both Alyssa and Ryan will be in full-day school. Alyssa is going into first grade, and Ryan is going into extended-day kindergarten (while he’s very smart, he needs extra help with communication, socialization and handling his emotions/anxieties and dealing with other people). And of course Puff is in full-day school, since he’s going into eleventh grade.

I haven’t had the time to really sit around and fantasize about what it will be like to have nearly eight straight hours to myself five days a week (for the first time ever I will be able to WORK like a normal person – 5-8 hours straight instead of 30 minutes – two hours here and there) because I’ve been really busy getting everything situated for school. Between enrollments and autism-related paperwork (Ryan & Puff) and medication-related paperwork (Puff) and setting up appointments for medical and dental physicals/checkups, and lots of phone calls and emails back and forth to Puff’s caseworker and his school guidance counselor, two full weeks have gone by without me buying so much as a pencil for any of them. Oops.

While Target will have all of the basic school supplies my kids and brother will need, I’m going to be checking out Tiny Prints’ back to school section for all of the extra goodies that’ll make this coming school year more organized and fun for me. I especially like the lunch box notes – what better way to encourage reading and connect with my kids when they’re at school? And I know my brother would love some friendship cards, since he’s determined to make more friends this year. As for me, I’m all about the emergency contact cards – consider these business cards for parents. I plan on ordering a set that has mine and Dan’s name, our home number, our cell phone numbers, and maybe 1-2 brief and cute tidbits about Alyssa and Ryan.

How are you getting ready for back to school?
