I’ve been slacking a little lately on my protein intake. My daily requirement is 60g, and I do my best to hit that – and if I do, I’ll try to go above and beyond and get 80g in. But it’s hard, because 1) I don’t have the capacity for a lot at a time (I get full on two ounces worth of liquid; a few bites of food – think a third of a Burger King hamburger, no bun; also, I can’t eat and drink at the same time) 2) I don’t have much of an appetite 3) there are many days when I have no desire for food and 4) I’ve been so BUSY this summer.
But I’m working on it. I’m trying even harder now because I need the protein. Despite taking my vitamins faithfully I’m getting tired easily and have been fighting the urge to nap, and I know it’s because of the protein deficiency. So this morning I chugged one of the oh-so-vile 2.9oz protein shots. It’s supposedly grape-flavored, but it doesn’t taste like any kind of grape flavoring I’ve ever had. This is one of the very few food/drink items that literally makes me gag and my stomach(s) churn when I drink it. But I force it down, because packed into that 2.9oz worth of grape-flavored sludge is 25g of protein – almost half of my daily requirement!
Anyway, to combat the tiredness on those nights where I need to stay up later to do things, I’ve been popping an extra vitamin b12 (5000mg baby), and I’ve also given caffeine pills a try. The ones I found at a gas station are called Stay Awake, and each one has the same amount of caffeine that is found in two cups of coffee – about 200mg? The first time I took one was on an empty stomach, and after an annoying case of jitteryness I settled down and was nice and perky for a good six hours. That happened again last night, which kind of sucked since I had to be up by 8:30am this morning, and the alertness finally wore off around 2:30am. (I put that time to good use by redesigning In My Bag!)
But the need for sleep will have to wait until tonight, because today I’m meeting Brandy, Dan and Krystal for breakfast, laser tag and who knows what else!

I totally recommend Magnesium if you have a lack of energy – especially since caffeine can be addictive.
I have never found a Protein shake that was palatable – I have nothing but sympathy for you
If you value your heart health, you’ll stop taking those pills. They are SO BAD for you.
