Embracing the new me

I had a lot of reservations about getting my hair cut so short, even though I knew it would be the best thing to do, considering how badly damaged my hair was. It’s been a long time since my hair was last this short. I just dug around in Flickr, and the last time my hair was this short was nearly eight (eight!) years ago. Here’s a picture from that time, so you can see both the hair and just how different the 19 year old me looked:

Things are so much different now. Besides being eight years older, I’m also over 150 lbs lighter, and so much happier with myself. I’m more comfortable in my own body, if that makes sense. A few days ago someone remarked that I obviously love color – at the time I had on a bright green tank top with matching sparkly green eyeshadow, bright purple nail polish on my fingernails, a slightly darker shade of purple on my toenails, and of course I was sporting my bright pink hair. And I told them that I’ve always loved color; it’s just been more recently that I’ve finally been able to really embrace it and show off that love. So much of plus size clothing just isn’t available in bright colors. As if dressing in blacks, grays, browns and muted shades of pink (think salmon), yellow (think saffron) and green (think seaweed) will magically hide those extra dozens of pounds. I wore those colors and styles because that was all I could find, even in the “stylish” and “young” selections of plus size clothing. But now, in regular sizes, I can get a tank top or a basic hoodie in any damn color of the rainbow. It’s exciting. It’s exhilarating. It’s also maddening. A woman, whether she’s thin, fat or “just right”, deserves to wear whatever color she wants.

With that said, I do really love my new hair. Don’t get me wrong – I miss my long hair, but I miss it when it was healthy and I didn’t have to worry about brushing it or smothering it in tons of super deep conditioner. I’ll keep the hot pink for a while, then cover it and hopefully the dark contrast of my roots with purple, but my goal is to grow my hair long again, and keep it mostly natural. I’ll probably still use brightly colored dyes from time to time, but sans bleach – so I’ll have my natural dark brown hair with a raspberry or plum tint.

  1. I really like the hair cut because it’s kinda edgy like the color. Idk what color i’m going to go with after this violet starts getting less… violet. Maybe red? I love color myself but I use ashley stewart for my color fix. I was able to get a cute green, silver, and black and a peachy silk top as well. I find more urban plus size stores carry better colors.

  2. Love the haircut – in fact, I had that one last before the one I have now! I did that one twice in a row and LOVED it. :) You look great in that cut – better than I ever did! :D

I absolutely love your new hair cut! When I was younger, I always wanted to try that kind of style but I never had the balls to have my hair cut any in that way. I just went with an average blunt cut, maybe with tapering/layer/feathering (what-have-you). It looks great with the pink and I’m always so happy to see people embracing color in their wardrobe. I’d like to spice up my wardrobe the same way eventually. Go Jenn! :D

  4. My friend wanted to dye her hair a bright red this weekend, and the only way to get it as bright as she wanted was to use bleach first…I refused to do it. I have this huge fear of messing up someone’s hair due to bleaching. I’m glad you’re giving your hair time to rest and get healthy again.
