Once upon a time I thought I did a fairly good job at keeping our carpets clean. Sure, we wore our shoes in the house, as did invited guests, but I vacuumed every two to three days, and would routinely drag out the carpet cleaner once every one to two months and give the carpets two to three scrubbings with it. Then a salesman from a pricey vacuum company did a demo of both their vacuum, and the optional add-on upholstery cleaning attachment. I was amazed, shocked, and disgusted. Since then I have been religiously insistent that nobody wear shoes in the house, and I vacuum every one to two days (depending on what the kids have been up to and if the cats are shedding excessively, I’ll sometimes vacuum twice in a day!). And I have that spiffy upholstery cleaning attachment.
