It’s snowing out. For as long as I can remember, the first substantial snowfall — that is, one that would result in an inch or more of accumulation — usually isn’t until mid- to late November. Yet today, on October 29th, there’s a good 3-4″ of wet, heavy snow on the ground, and it’s still snowing. Monday is Halloween, and the nighttime temperature is expected to dip into the low 30s and possibly the high 20s, so I’ll have to bundle up the kids and make sure they have gloves — and hope that residents have salted their walkways and driveways! Otherwise it’ll be a slip & slide Trick or Treat.
In anticipation of the power possibly going out (the lights have flickered several times, and we did lose power for a few seconds about an hour ago) I made dinner early, charged up all of the mobile devices1, set out some candles, put a small flashlight in my pocket, and turned up the thermostat to a toasty 75°. This way if the power does go out, alternative lighting is close at hand, there’s stuff to do, and we’d have several hours before it would get chilly.
But more than anything I worry about Daniel. He had to drive into work in this damn mess several hours ago, and passed a truck that slid off the road into a telephone pole. And then he has to drive back home in it. What’s sucky about our location is that we’re at a pretty high elevation, and there’s no way to get to our road without going up one or more steep, windy roads. Some are steeper than others, but in snowy weather they’re all treacherous. ♥ you Daniel – drive safely tonight!

Ugh, do not envy you at all. I’m so not ready to deal with the snow. We actually went for a walk earlier as a family. It’s in the upper 40′s here but slowly going down.

You can really get stuck on your roads. I remember coming to visit you once Matt and I almost got stuck.

That’s something I don’t miss about the Northeast. Well…okay, only a little, but definitely not this early…it’s not even Halloween yet, wth?

I still can’t believe you are getting snow there this early! Hopefully it’s just a freak thing and you’re not going to get a super cold winter. That’s just crazy!
