Meet Terabyte #2.
Needless to say, I woke up this morning to a dead Betta fish. I have no idea what happened to Terabyte #1. I measured out water for his tank the day before I got him; treated the water with the appropriate chemicals (and the right amounts of them); I carefully cleaned and thoroughly rinsed the tank before adding anything to it; cleaned and thoroughly rinsed all tank stuff (substrate, mermaid statue, filter, heater, thermometer); I made sure the water was up to temp before floating Terabyte #1′s cup in it; added water slowly to his cup; then finally introduced him to the tank. He was fine. I had to repeat all of those steps with a different tank whose water output wasn’t so fast (Bettas like still water with very little disruption from water intake valves and the like), and once again, he was fine. Then I wake up this morning, and he’s dead as a door nail. *sigh* Fortunately the pet store I bought him from has a good refund/exchange policy, provided you bring them the receipt, the fish, and the water sample.
While we were at the pet store where for the second time in as many days I spent a ridiculous amount of time looking over all of the available Betta fish before finally selecting one that met my standards (healthy looking, alert, and pretty, heh), Dan was doing some fish shopping of his own – he talked to an employee who recommended a dwarf puffer for the 2 gallon setup that is on his computer desk (I cleaned it and set it up this morning in preparation for the neon tetra or glo-fish Dan originally thought he was going to pick out. My heart repeatedly melts at the idea of him wanting, being excited over, and ultimately happy with, having a fish of his own. ♥). We also brought home four snails (one for each tank) – snails not only help with algae, but they give Betta fish, who don’t do well living with most other species of freshwater, warm fish, something to look at and be entertained by. Speaking of which, I was pretty entertained by Dan’s snail in particular. It totally attached itself to and nommed away on a shrimp pellet that we put in the tank for Dan’s dwarf puffer (yet to be named). Snails, despite their name, can move along at a pretty good clip, especially in water.
A quick stop at McDonald’s beforehand for lunch, and afterwards for treats, and that was our day. I was glad to come home. I’m on my period again (this time my uterus was so kind as to give me a whopping 19 day reprieve between the end of the last one and the beginning of this one), and Midol and Flexeril are making my world go ’round right now. Once we were home I opened a package from Mr. Chewy1 (I’m sure the FedEx guy hates me for ordering a 12 lb bag of cat food and a 14 lb box of cat litter), gave the kids the box to play with, then caught up on some emails and RSS feeds before the four of us played a game of Scrabble – boys vs. girls. Reading/writing has always been a strong suit of mine, so it’s no surprise that Alyssa and I beat the pants off of Dan and Ryan by almost 100 points. ;)
Now I’m going to hop into the shower and de-grossify myself, then settle down for hopefully a few more hours of work and maybe some layout designing. Same for tomorrow – a day spent in, relaxing with husband & sproglets. Psst… don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead tonight! Yay for Daylight Saving Time. I’m seriously in the mood for bright mornings, sunny days, and warm temperatures (which we’ll be getting this week).

First there was Megabyte (April 2nd, 2011 – April 12th, 2011), who sadly passed away less than 24 hours after I brought him home from the pet store. Then there was Gigabyte (April 12th, 2011 – March 7th, 2012, who became fatally ill and had to be euthanized on Wednesday night. Now there’s Terabyte.
I’m a total cat person, but there’s something about Bettas that I really, really like. They’re beautiful, but they’re also very personable! Seriously, I’ve always said that a fish is just a fish, but when it comes to Bettas, each one does have its own unique little personality.

I had to euthanize Gigabyte tonight. He developed dropsy, and despite treating him and doing water changes over the past week, he got worse, not better. Tonight his scales were doing the telltale pineconing, and his color was fading, and he was clearly suffering, so with clove oil & ice-cold water I put him out of his misery. It wasn’t pleasant, but I couldn’t stand the idea of letting him ride out a painful death.
Goodbye, gorgeous. You kept me company whenever I worked at my desk. ♥
