My first impression of SilkFair is that is a more extravagant version of eBay. And hey, I’m all for that, as the clean lines, muted colors and lack of flashing banners and logos is a nice and welcomed change. Of course, SilkFair is a lot like eBay, in that buyers and sellers alike are free to use the website and online stores to sell and purchase products and services.

Features of SilkFair include:

free registration and website use

quick listing process

unique store URLs for sellers

one-step checkout process for buyers

integrated payment gateways, including authorize.net, credit card merchants, Google Checkout and PayPal

blog and message board capabilities for each online store

Like other auction sites, SilkFair includes the ability for users to leave one another feedback. As a bonus, and a way to get more integrated, Silkfair can link to existing ratings and feedbacks at eBay.

I tried out the seller part of SilkFair, and it was quite easy to use. I was able to set everything up — titles, prices, descriptions, tags (tags! I love tags!) and images — all on one page! The whole process was incredibly easy, and left nothing to be desired.

Here’s my example listing:

(By the way, that Sidekick II really is for sale for $50.00. Email me if you’re interested!)

Oh, and here’s a lame and rather embarrassing video of me talking about why oysters are so good. I swear, I haven’t done an acrostic poem since high school!

Dan’s grandmother was very smart when it came to money. We knew that she had some money in savings and investments, but it wasn’t until her death last year (February 23rd, 2008 will be the one year anniversary of her death) that we all realized how much. Her children and grandchildren will be receiving substantial amounts of money from various investment funds and trusts for several years, starting this year. And apparently there is more to be divvied up, between the sale of her beautiful home, and another trust fund that is being situated.

Dan often talks of putting money into investments. We have a 401k plan that has over double the money put into it. I know of many people who look into bonds, stocks and other investments. Another popular option seems to be investing in and converting currency to gold and silver. Monex, a company I recently heard about, is apparently one popular and reputable choice for seeking gold and silver to purchase. Once the gold is purchased, personal delivery arrangements can be made, or secure storage can be set up.

I admit that I don’t know the first thing about investments, particularly investments in gold, silver and other precious metals. Do you have any knowledge in this? Is it worthwhile?

Whenever I hear or see the term performance management I am immediately reminded of an asshole of a manager I had when I worked at a fast food place in Pittsburgh, back in 2003. He would do random checks on his employee’s performances at their duties out of nowhere AND while they were busy with customers. It was extremely embarrassing and discomforting to being watched, evaluated and criticized while serving customers. It was unprofessional, too. I really wish they would have canned that jerk of a manager. He created some very uncomfortable situations!
